New issue when waking from sleep — apps are non-responsive

So this is a new one...

I believe my computer self-updated the other day (I have automatic updates turned on) and I'm now running 10.14.5.

Lately, when I wake the machine from sleeping, the mouse is responsive and I can swap between desktops, but none of the apps are responsive. Clicking does nothing. I can't access the apple menu to restart. Keyboard commands appear to work (I can access the task manager and I can use the keyboard to navigate amongst the items, but I can't click on anything.). The only thing that seems to remedy the issue is a hard restart using the physical power button.

Any ideas? I'd love to not need a restart every time I take my computer between home and the office.

Different issue, but seen similar. And not even after sleep. Seeing on occasion where programs will not recognize minimize. If I go to the dock and "Hide" from there, ok. And then things work ok after that.

Chalking it up to .5/.6. And not happening enough to get me in a snit, for now.

Try updating to 10.14.6 and hope it is fixed. If this is while connected to external monitor (4k in my case) then it was reported to Apple bugreport and they closed it as duplicate. There are reports on similar issues in this and other forums. Not that common, but few have seen it. Apple supposedly fixed something like this in 10.14.6. See if that helps and report here, please.

My solution was to modify sleep parameters, so when connected to AC power (and likely to external monitor) not to fall to sleep but only power down monitor. This "fixed" it for my system - it is ugly workaround, though...

Thanks gents. Updated to .6 this morning — waiting to see if that resolved the issue or not. This IS when connected to an external monitor, and I also ran into this issue for the first time today unrelated to the machine sleeping/waking. Was just working and bam, there it goes. (This is what prompted me to run the software update.)

Yeah, updating to 10.14.6 did not fix my issues.

Yeah, I was hoping to avoid a clean install since that's a royal PITA. But it looks like I'm left with no choice.
