Target to launch digital music service
Wednesday July 6, 4:01 pm ET

Target Corp. is close to rolling out a digital music subscription service, according to Forbes.
The Minneapolis-based discount retailer will offer single-track music downloads similar to those offered by Apple Computer's iTunes store. But the service will offer unlimited music downloads for a flat monthly fee similar to the service offered by companies such as Napster.

Target's music service will offer a "tethered" service, that only allows the music to be played on users' personal computers, and a "portable" service, that allows users to transfer tracks to their digital music players. The portable service will not be compatible with the popular iPod music player. The service will reportedly cost between $6.99 and $14.95 a month.

A real competitor would be a subscription based service that offers unprotected mp3s encoded at 256 or even uncompressed files that can be played on any player including the iPod. It would be based on the honor system and would require you to delete all your mp3s downloaded if you terminate your subscription.
