New Java Killed My Safari... I Think

So, I just downloaded the new Java 1.5, but now my Safari.app is acting all strange and keeps quitting. For example, whenever I try to view some Amazon pages, Google Maps, or even when I tried to post on here (I'm using Firefox right now...) Safari would just quit.

Is this happening to anyone else? How do I fix it?

Also, if it is any help, this problem occurs both under 1.4.2 and 1.5 when I change it in Java Preferences and restarting does nothing...

Not many web pages (Amazon doesn't, nor does MacRumors) use Java applets, so I'm not sure how it could affect how normal web pages load.

Have you tried other browsers like Firefox or Camino or Opera?

Yeah, everything works fine on Firefox, which I am using now until I get things fixed, but I prefer Safari. Any other ideas?

Try Camino browser. I dont know what your needs are but once preferances are set Camino works splendidly for me.

I'm sure that other browsers work well... but is there any way to fix Safari? It can't be that big of a problem to warrant switching preferred browsers...

Ok, I can dig your preferance. I don't know if this will do any good, but did you try resetting Safari? I found this got me out of any jam to do with that App.

Alright, I totally will try that, but is there a way to save my saved passwords? And does it remove bookmarks too? Just don't want to do too much damage since it's not guaranteed to work...
 
I thought the J2SE 5.0 install did not change the default Java version for apps or applets. That's what the lengthy readme seems to indicate - you have to do stuff to make apps and applets (Safari) use it instead of 1.4.2.

Therefore it shouldn't have affected your Safari at all - unless you made these default changes or had done so previously (i.e. you were already using a 5.0 preview).

FWIW my Safari is running fine since the install of 5.0 but my defaults are still at the Apple-shipped 1.4.2.
 
Well, I would have just installed it and let things be but I (after reading about it on MacRumors) decided to check out the Java Preferences app and changed my setting to Java 5.0 but saw no special difference so have since changed back, but things are still messed up.

Try rebooting. ;)

My Safari froze once, on a java intensive site just after I installed the java upgrade. I just force quit Safari, rebooted, and Safari has played nice ever since... :)

No, rebooting does no good. However, I am trying to figure out what product pages on Amazon, Google Maps, and the MacRumors thread composing page common since they all force Safari to quit.

According to their page sources, they all heavily use JavaScript... could this be what is messed up in Safari? Is there a way to fix it, if it is?
 
Safari was good until 2.0 then Apple broke it. I upgraded a 10.3.9 PowerMac G5 to 10.4 and Safari has never worked right ever since. Performance sucks, it always generates errors when loading pages, so on and so forth.

Two days ago I finally performed an erase and install of my entire hard disk and only reimported by Safari bookmarks. Safari seems to be working better but still not as good as the 1.x days. I really miss Safari 1.x. Apple really screwed up with this release.

I am not suprised you are having problems.

Have you tried the following (in order one at a time)? Empty cache, reset safari, delete Safari prefs file, trash Safari and all prefs and reinstall from the OSX CD?

Doesn't Steve Jobs use Safari? If so why isn't he on the developers backs to fix it? :mad:

Copied directly from the dialog box, this is what resetting Safari will do:

Resetting Safari erases your browsing history, empties the cache, clears the Downloads window, and removes cookies. It also removes any saved names and passwords or other AutoFill text and clears Google search entries.

So if your website passwords are stored in cookies then they will be lost. Your bookmarks will not be touched.
 
None of these suggestions seem to work... Can I just reinstall the Safari app from the os x cd?
