New Laptop Security Measure?

It seems like a really good idea - and has a fair price. The issue in my mind is how effective is their technology - ie. will it do what it is supposed to if the need should ever arise?

I have heard of programs like this for PC's but never heard any comments on how well they worked. Seems to me that just getting a Kensington Cable Lock would work just as well if th computer is usually on a desk. Kensington Cable Lock

I use my laptop at home, school, and work. All three places have different network settings. Does that mean I get an email every time I go to a different place?

Also, what if the thief is smart enough to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS?

sounds like if they aren't preset locations then you would get an email but if they are then your ok.

Personaly if i was going to steal a laptop I would format the hard drive 10 times or so before I pluged it in to the net. Some of thoes programs can survive 1 or 2 reformats but 5 or more should delete it. Some programs do better jobs than others on formats. If it was a desktop comp I would remove the HD and zap it with a magnet.
I would never steal someones computer by the way.

People that steal comps normaly have no idea about them and end up selling them to someone or a pawnshop. But any computer nerd could find and delete a program like lapcop in os x. I couldn't find one on my PC its crazy how unorganized XP is!

If I ever get a laptop for school I hope to sometime I would buy one of thoes programs.

Heres the thing, at my school less than 3% of students will use Macintosh computers so ....whos gonna have OSX restore DVD to format my powerbook probably no one.

And for added fun, I either log out, or activate my screensaver password feature, and also have set the open firmware password so that no one can reformat my HD without the both passphrases. Even if they did steal it, it would be largely useless to them the first time the screensaver kicked in, unless they want to pull out and replace the HD, but I guess there's not much you can do about that anyway.
