I'm thinking of maxing out the RAM to 96 gigs - using it for minimal 3D effects in AE, and 4k/ 6k video editing... will PrePro or DV Resolve utilize the 96 Gigs or should just stay at 65 ?

Thanks.

If you have to ask, the answer is you should absolutely do it.

If you're worried that After Effects and 6K video editing isn't enough to use up all that RAM, you can always open up a few Chrome tabs or something.

I think that question is best asked on Pre Pro or DV Resolve forms. They would know for sure if it can access the full 96 GB of Ram. I'm pretty sure it can though.

OP:

If you can state to us exactly WHY you need 96gb of RAM, then that extra memory is probably "worth it" to you.

If you cannot do so... then it's probably NOT worth it.

If you can afford it and easily make back the money, go for it. Better safe than sorry... considering the choice is permanent and you can't add more later. Getting 96GB would both ensure that you won't run into a cap, and keep your drive healthier since there wouldn't be any swap (unless you ran like 200 chrome tabs but I don't know why anyone would do that unless they were bored)

MacOS will use more memory if you have it available. That will makes things more efficient.

Right now my Activity Monitor is showing that I have 58.91 GB Memory Used, out of the 96 GB. But, the sum of my "Wired" and "Active" memory is only 42 GB. So, MacOS decided to hang on to an extra 16 GB of stuff for the sake of efficiency. If I were to shut down a bunch of applications or end certain processes within those applications, the 42 GB would go down, but the total Memory Used would not go down as much. That would allow me to reopen programs and other things much more quickly. I suppose using those video tools involves running the same processes within them repeatedly; having extra headroom would make that much more efficient.

On the other hand, it's very hard to tell how much you'll notice the extra efficiency and whether it's worth the price. My computer is like lightning when I kick off repeated compiles. But, I have no idea what it would be like with less RAM.
