A LOOONNGTime Windows user, I just ordered and received my spankin' new IMac 2.4 20".

It truly is a beautiful piece of equipment. Didn't notice any problems with my screen...in fact, I was pleased at how nice it was (after reading about all of the potential problems). I am having a bit of a learning curve with OSX and plan to upgrade to Leopard, but I'm having fun with Tiger at present.

My dilemna...In the first 2 days, I've experienced freeze-ups, and painfully slow performance. Although I only have 1 Gig of RAM (will be upgrading to 3 Gig soon), I don't think my system is working properly. Safari CRAWLS, and the numerous System download updates won't install - each one starts and indicates hours of download time (for a stupid 36MB update, eg.) and eventually hangs.

What can I do? Any ideas/suggestions/help?

I'm so frustrated. I'm actually writing this on my POS Windows machine but I want to get cranking on my beautiful IMac. Help please???

If you don't have a lot of stuff on your iMac yet, do a fresh erase and install off of the DVDs that came with your system. Freezing is a known issue and will, hopefully, be rectified by Apple soon but you will need Software Update working for sure.

If a fresh install doesn't work, try the diagnostics disc, or take it in to your local Apple dealer or certified reseller. Poor performance on a new iMac is unacceptable.

Stupid question

How do I do erase and do a fresh install?

Do I just stick the installation disk in and it will prompt me?

Also, what about the files that I've created (goofy pictures with my son)...will they be gone?

BTW-Thanks for the quick responses!

Petch to do a fresh install just put the OSX Disc 1 in your iMac and it will prompt you f you want to reinstall the OS. If you have any files as you say of your son, back those up as it will not be on the computer after a fresh install.

Don't forget that your machine came with a warranty and phone support. Call Applecare at 800-275-2273 (in the US). They're very good about walking you through stuff like this.
