new mac mini ... how to drive 2560 x 1440 using vga

New mac mini 2012 "late 2012" ... using mini display to vga connection.

Hooked to an Auria ( microcenter $399. ) that does 2560 x 1440 beautifully!

So far only at 1080p ...

Anyone have cheat sheet instructions on what to do here to try to drive at full resolution?

Looks like I am on 10.8.1 ( doing time machine backup now ) about to do software updates in a couple of minutes here.

Switch to displayport.... VGA connections have a max of something like 2050 x 1500 (give or take)

Confused ... I have an apple mini display adapter to VGA in the thunderbolt connection ... what do you mean by "switch to displayport"?

Looks like only HDMI out or thunderbolt/mini display out.

Monitor runs VGA from asus windows machine fine at 2560 x 1440.

Get a MDP to DP cable. MDP end goes in the Thunderbolt port and DP goes to the Auria.

VGA is not spec-ed officially to handle those resolutions, and more importantly, the miniDP (mini-DisplayPort, the same shape as Thunderbolt) output of the Mac Mini, even Thunderbolt models, cannot do dual-link resolutions without some sort of active adapter.

Luckily for you, you have the Auria with a number of inputs unlike the Korean imports, so instead of to VGA (which you really should deprecate and never use again if you don't have to), get a miniDP to full-size DisplayPort adapter and plug in to the DisplayPort of the Auria instead.

Long story short, VGA sucks. Buy a miniDP to DP adapter from Monoprice, or miniDP to DP cable.

Did you even look at the link I provided in December? VGA can not handle the resolutions you are trying to throw at it. Displayport is what your monitor has and Mini-displayport (i.e. thunderbolt) is what your Mini has. A mini-displayport to displayport cable (found for $6 at monoprice) will fix your problem and give you full resolution....

VGA is an analog technology and belongs, as far as consumer electronics concern, in the 1900s. It does not support resolutions beyond 1920x1200, and your ASUS machine is operating it outside of the specification.

Your Mac Mini has a Mini DisplayPort, which is a digital technology and gives a better image quality than VGA. It also supports much larger resolutions. Your screen has a matching port, but it's the regular sized DisplayPort. You need a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter cable, to connect the devices in the best possible way, via a digital connection that supports the full resolution of the screen.
