Hello everyone I purchased a new 6-core mac mini (intel model) from the online apple store. It was a custom order so its taken a little while to get to me.

I connect it to my monitor via HDMI like my 2010, 2011 and 2012 mac minis, except I get no video output.

I call the local Apple number, which I assume is a call center in Europe, did some troubleshooting, and have since ended up down the path of a faulty device return and replacement order being created.

Except I have connected it to my TV via HDMI today and it has worked!

Having done further searching online, it seems that HDMI to DVI adapters (even the apple adapters) dont work with newer models. I have seen articles which suggest i would need a USB-C to DVI multiport adapter instead. This seems a bit crazy to me, I admit I have an older monitor, but what on earth is going on?

I am now not sure what to do, whether I should just continue with a return/replacement which probably also wont work, buy an apple adapter for £75 to see if that works instead or just buy a new monitor all together.

Please do let me know what you think is the best way to deal with this, thanks!

It’s a benq g2222hdl, so full HD and LED but only DVI and VGA inputs. Very old probably over 12 years but no dead pixels and it’s a solid performer.

There is at least one long thread here (maybe more) from a few years ago about the DVI problems on the 2018 Mini. IIRC, the issue is that the HDMI port doesn't provide enough voltage for the DVI adapter/monitor. Apparently the M1 Mini uses the same HDMI chipset and has the same problem.

Just from memory, I think people were able to successfully use DVI monitors with an adapter on a thunderbolt/USB-C port however, as you noted. Again, this is just from memory, but I believe the Apple HDMI to DVI adapters have the same problem, so buying one of those (at £75?!) probably won't help.

Most likely, your options would be trying to find an adaptor for the USB-C port or else getting a new screen that has either an HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C interface built in. I'm using a BenQ 32" QHD monitor with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable on my 2018 Mini and have no problems. Just anecdotally, there seem to be a whole variety of issues with HDMI on the 2018 Mini.
