Hi all,

I am currently running a dual 867 powermac. Would the new mac mini single or dual be any improvement over what I already have? Or should I just go and buy iLife 06 and be happy?

Thanks
Ian

It depends entirely on what you are doing with the machine. Since you haven't told us, and since we don't know how your G4 is configured, we can only guess.

Ultimately, once all the programs you use regularly are Universal Binary, the Mini intel Core Duo should be considerably faster, the Core Single somewhere in between.

OTOH, if you have any software that is OS9 or Classic dependant, or will not become Universal soon, or if you have a significant investment in PCI cards or other hardware that will have compatibility or driver problems, then you may be better staying with the 867 Dual until your primary requirements change.

Fair point. I'm really using the machine for ilife apps, watching video, internet email etc. In other words nothing heavy duty.

What do you do?

The only place that the PowerMac may smoke the mini is in graphics.

If I were in your shoes, and those were my choices, I would probably go with the mini. For the price, you can't beat it, and you could probably sell the PM for quite a bit.

Just my opinion.

Max.

Yeah, if you're not doing intensive gaming then the Mac Mini is what you want. Hopefully you can reuse your mouse, keyboard, and display.

You should makes some nice cash off of that Power Mac toward the Mini too.

You can't do intensive gaming on a dual 867 either...

Eh, UT2004 with a good video card and enough RAM. I play FreeSpace 2 on one. :D

Well a single CPU Quicksilver that it.

Like Eidorian said, with a new graphics card and some extra RAM, a 867MHz DP Power Mac G4 could do some decent gaming. But no, nothing super intensive like Doom III (although, with a CPU upgrade, that could be done).

If you're going to stick with web browsing, iLife, and Photoshop (Once it's Universal) then the Duo Core Mini would be your best buy in the long run. Yeah, I've run iLife 05 on a single CPU 933 and it was fine with me. I had a Radeon 9000 and 1.25 GB of RAM though.

The resale value on that Power Mac G4 Dual CPU is still pretty high. I'd say sell it and enjoy a new faster machine. It'll be a lot faster for encoding and some more of the processor intensive work in iLife. Just don't expect to game much on the new Mini. The GPU isn't a 3D powerhouse and you won't be able to upgrade it. If you're going to replace your monitor too just go with the 17" Intel iMac.

Personally, I would stay with the Power Mac for the massive upgradeability (not to mention the fact that it has two drive bays, which is a must for me). I love my MDD, and I would never trade it for a mini, no matter how superior the specs are, because I simply like having the option of changing out components at will and still having a powerful machine.

Of course, my PowerPC loyal self may be getting in the way a little too. ;)

Well it could be a Dual 867 Quicksilver or MDD. :D

Still, I use a single CPU MDD 1.25 GHz as my work machine. I just web browse, listen to iTunes, and use iLife. I think it's fast enough for that. The Dual 867 should run circles around my machine still. Just get iLife 06 and save your money for the Mac you really want.

Actually, the Quicksilvers only came with a single 867 (the mid range or the first rev. and the education model of 2002). ;) There is a dual 800 model, but the next up from that was the dual 1 GHz.

My Mac specification knowledge wasn't perfect. *sobs*

lol, it's ok, you had me questioning it too. I find that Mactracker can be your best friend sometimes, just to be doubly sure. :D
Hallelujah...

I'm still the kind person that obsesses over memorization though. :D

Hahahaha, niiice! I like to stress over the memorization too, so you're not alone there. It's just nice to know I've got a backup source as close as the dock. :p

Mini. It's small, it's beautiful, it's silent, and now you can stuff 2GB of RAM into it. And firewire a big fat drive off it. Can't wait to relegate my B&W to backroom work (i love it, but man are those things LOUD).

Loud? You've never used a Quicksilver or a MDD, have you? :p
Before I got my MDD, I used to think my B&W was loud....now I don't even notice it. Heck, I don't even notice my MDD anymore either (I was fortunate enough to not get one of the louder ones), but it's still a ton louder than the B&W.

I have my MDD on my left side, two LCD's in the middle and my B&W on the right side, and I truly don't notice them at all anymore. I guess it was hearing about all of the noise issues with the MDD before I got it that made me take particular notice of it at first, now it's like nothing, even when they're both running simultaneously.

I'm using my B&W as a media centre so the noise is a bit more noticeable in that environment than a work space.

I think I'll get a Quicksilver anyway, to take web serving off the B&W - just cos they look the nicest of the cheap firewire-boot models.

And a new Mini later, one day, and a MiniStack, and a 500GB drive, and an ElGato...

I have a dual 867 right now, I love it, but I wanted to go mobile so i bought a macbook pro 2.0ghz. If I ever receive it, my powermac is goin on ebay :(
