New mac mini

Inam going to purchase a new mini and max out the ram , But I would like to know which would be the quicker machine the server or the standard i7 , I would purchase either with the 8 memory .

The server part is not that important to me but you never know! , I a m most likely to just plug it in to my TV and off we go.

The server model has the faster CPU, but your usage might not require the faster model.
What do you want to use the Mac mini for?

The quad core server is definately going to be faster, but if you're going to hook it up to your TV to use primarilly as a home theater PC then you probably don't need the extra power the server has to offer. You may not even need the power of the mid range mini, the entry level model may suit your needs.

Also, don't buy the RAM upgrade from apple. You can find RAM online for much cheaper, and it's easy to install yourself. If you can open a door you can install RAM in a Mac mini.

A bit of streaming movies etc , Internet ,mail etc , we a house full of apple stuff , I would rather buy the better one once even if is over the top , time goes buy and suddenly there a lot better than they were. I am not a techie at all , would like the kids to homework etc and send to their laptops etc iPads ,iPods just normal everyday stuff.

The mid range mini should suit your needs well. The server might be overkill.

Then the basic Mac mini will more than suffice for your needs, it even has a better GPU which might help for playing H.264 encoded videos, though it is not necessary.
Even my 2008 MacBook and 2007 iMac can do what you want to do with your Mac mini with ease.

The discrete GPU will provide more flexibility with multimedia. The Intel HD 3000 integrate is plenty powerful, but video quality is better with the AMD discrete GPU. However, the Mac Mini Server runs significantly cooler than the i7 dual core.
