Hey all...

I am new to Apple computers. I have had the iPhone for a while and of course fell in love. Well, I have a mac mini scheduled to arrive at my place tomorrow. :D

It is a used one... (look at my sig for specs) It has leopard installed on it. My question to you all is since this is my first apple computer, and I have been using Windows for 14+ years, what are some of the best places to download free software for macs? If I use Yahoo! mail, not PLUS, can it be forwarded to use the e-mail package provided with leopard? If not, what does everyone use that is compatible (and free if possible) for e-mail?

Also, I want to be able to run time machine. But are there settings that can be set on it? For instance, the hard drive on the mini is 120GB. Can I set time machine to only use a certain amount of space, for instance only 10-20 GB's? Or just save information for one month then delete? I won't be using the mini to "work" on, just as a fun toy as well as class work once in a while, but I have no need to save EVERYTHING I do...

What other tips can you all pass out to me? Anything is appreciated!

Hi, welcome to macs! I just switched about 7 weeks ago myself after 17 years of Microsoft. You won't believe you didn't get on a mac sooner!

First off, to run time machine, you will need a external hard drive. Second, yahoo! mail will work with apple mail... I believe it is IMAP which will be even nice! If it isn't google mail just went IMAP.

Welcome.

Depending on what software you want to download......versiontracker and apple are good places to start.

As far as Yahoo Mail working with Apple mail, I can't figure it out and am pretty sure you need mail plus from Yahoo. Go with Gmail.

Time Machine requires an external HD.

The only external I have as of right now is a western digital passport... 120GB.

Here is a link to what I have:

Is this compatible with time machine? If not that sucks because I just purchased it since it was portable for my laptop for school as well as compatible with macs.

If it IS compatible, can I unplug it and take it with me whenerver I want, ie if I need to take it to school with me? Also, can that be set up so time machine only uses a certain amount of space? Like I said before, I am not a deeloper or anything, so I am not too worried about losing any important information...
