In the water
Almost every time I wake the machine from sleep (especially if it's been a longer period, i.e. lunch or a longer break), I get a screen filled with static noise (think cosmic ray background). Sometimes it will flicker to the actual screen for a moment before returning to static.

Pulling the connector cable or power and reconnecting usually clears it up, but it's a bit unsettling seeing this on a brand new and rather expensive machine. The monitor is a HP 27" office display, HD resolution, in case it matters.

Thoughts?

This sounds potentially like a bad cable. Have you tried replacing the HDMI/Displayport cable you're using to connect the HP display?

Have you tried connecting a different brand display to see if it's the fault of the HP?

Doubt it’s the cable, I have exactly the same issue with my second display hanging off the W5700X HDMI port. Different cables and displays made no difference. Doesn’t happen every time.

Don’t have any issue with my ASUS 4K Thunderbolt 3 display. Only the HDMI display. Pulling and reconnecting the cable restores normal operation, but it’s very annoying.

Did a fresh install of macOS 11.1 Big Sur this week but haven’t used my machine much over Christmas, keen to see if the issue has been solved.
