Hey guys,,

I am planning to get a 8CORE MAC PRO for my workstation but just wondering if you guys think an update is right around the corner since they have the new lighting bolt on the MBPs,,,

Cheers,

Check out the MR Buyers guide here https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//

Hope this helps, It may not be until late in the year that they update the mac pro though as there isn't really a better processor for them out to upgrade too at the moment.

The processors that replace the ones currently used are scheduled for Q4 2011. Based on Apple's release history you should expect new Mac Pros in November, January or February.

Yeah, its almost that time of year where people will say how Apple is way behind the curve with new Mac Pro's...lol

Some of the Sandy Bridge server processors won't be available until Q1 2012. I'd say significantly new Mac Pros probably won't be released until February or March of 2012.

It was a year and a half between the most recent update in August 2010 and the previous one. I don't expect much different now.

From what has been leaked so far those processors are EN (socket B2 - LGA 1356) and EX (MP processors), so shouldn't affect Mac Pro release dates as they won't be used by Apple.

So what's your prediction? Sooner than late 2011/early 2012? I'm also strongly considering buying but will feel really dumb if Apple updates in the next few months...

Uh... That is actually LGA2011 which debuts in Q4 2011

I really can't seen them releasing anything before November.

Yeah it is, I'm not disagreeing with that :). ValSalva pointed out that some Xeons are due in Q1 2012, and I was pointing out that they weren't candidates for the Mac Pro.

all

SB MP's will be available in about 12 months: ~March 2012 give or take a month or two.

Highly unlikely as they have never done it before - and they have had opportunities as processors used by Apple have been replaced by faster ones at the same cost.

Yeah, kind of my thought too. I just pulled the trigger on the 6 x 3.33 model because I *really* needed to update my 2006 1,1, 2 x 2.66. I don't mind though, that kind of time shaved is definitely money for me.

I doubt Intel will do the i7 Extreme socket beyond the 990, but if they do, it would be nice to know it is an option in a couple years if I am feeling the need. The difference between my 980 and the new one is not much in terms of clock speed. Only downside about the current models are Sata-II instead of III, oh well, when you have to upgrade, you simply have to.

they could do a summer update with

http://www.provantage.com/intel-bx80613w3670~7ITEP3E5.htm base 6 core 3.2

http://www.provantage.com/intel-bx80613w3690~7ITEP3EC.htm second tier 6 core 3.46

this allows them to have a cpu 6 core as the base model.

but I am not sure what they would do for dual hex

If Apple were to keep things fresh, i.e. using the latest processors in each price band, the line up would be:

3.20GHz 4-core
3.20GHz 6-core
3.46Ghz 6-core

2.40GHz 8-core
2.66GHz 12-core
3.06Ghz 12-core

But they haven't done this before, very few workstation vendors do it, Apple have inventory in retail channels - which makes it even less likely, and really are they going to sell more systems? Probably not. Would be nice for the customer, but for Apple I doubt it would be any kind of benefit. Same sort of reason we don't get updated graphics cards, when usually the ones that come with the Mac Pro are outdated in a few months. The investment required and losses that would have to be taken aren't going to be covered by increased sales, let alone make more than they would have.

Apple should release a machine with the X5680 and X5690

3.33GHz 12-core

AND

3.46GHz 12-core

The chips are out, I don't know why Apple isn't doing this by now.

The X5690 makes the X5680 redundant. I don't know why Apple don't do it either. There must have been some issue with cooling/silencing two 130W TDP processors in the current design.
