I Have been waiting for three years to get a new Desktop, but the G5 disappointed me so I was waiting for this machine to come out. Was alway planning to wait a few months after it was released before purchasing to let the get the bugs out, With the upcoming introduction of blu-ray and HDCP(high def content protection) should I still plan on buying in Oct. or wait till late winter/early spring or until the next WWDC.? I have been saving since 2003 for a new Computer and currently have $7K ready. I can get the new Mac pro 3 ghz and a nice 30 LCD for 6K. Post comments.

wow, if i had 7k, there would be no way i would drop it on a computer unless i was doing some *serious* work and that i could use to computer to make my money back as well...

i think waiting for 3 years you owe it to yourself.... get applecare. if something goes wrong be persistent and nice, you will get what you want from apple
Personally I feel you should buy it, and get AppleCare just for safety. At the end of the day, Apple will eventually release a drive capable of HD-DVD + Blu-RAY, which you can easily put in the spare Superdrive slot... Instead of waiting for them to fix the bugs you can get on witht he things you need to.
Anyways, if you order the 3GHz Xeons and/or the X1900 GPU, then theres a couple of months delay, or so I've been led to believe... So by the time they source the parts, most of the initial bugs will be sorted, and your brand spanking new Mac Pro should be ready to devour everything you throw at it, bug-free!

What do you use your computer for?
In all honesty, if you're not going to be making money off of the work you do with your computer I can't recommend the Mac Pro.
If you do light consumer work and you need a desktop I would suggest the iMac.
I know it's your money but spending $6-7k on something that won't pay for itself is just insane. Save some of your money and get a machine that fits your needs.

Buy what you need.
Also, if you really want the computer and have been waiting this long, you should just get it. You can wait forever, or start using what is out now ...

I'd say get it. You can always update it later. IMHO, go for just one SuperDrive so you can pop in a Blu-Ray drive or a HD-DVD drive later in its life if you feel the need to.
Well, I bought my present Computer in 2000 a G4/500 Sawtooth With ATI 128 Card, 64 mb of ram, 10Gig HD. Since then I have upgraded it to 1.4 gighrz, 768 MB ram and a ATI Radeon 9800 pro. Went through 6 Hard drives. Currently it seems rather slow and bogged down, with the increasing work flow. I Use it for video and multimedia work. I originaly paid $2800 for it as I recall. So spending $6000 on a set up is nothing new for me, For monitor and CPU.
But in comparison, Early last year I got tired of emulating windows on the PPC, so I forked over $280 for a cheapo builtyourself PC a Sempron 1.5ghz. To play web games on(which is better than on a mac), view WMV media(which macs are sluggish at playing), and use windows software( sometimes needed) at decent speeds.
I know when I bought my G4, six months later it was obsolete. I NEED a new Computer and would like it now, but the smart thing is to wait until the next WWDC/Leopard. But I would like the Lower price of the 30 LCD and I know that APPLE is Coming out with new monitors, with specs for HDCP. Anyway.....

While I understand this point, there is an argument for buying more powerful machines even for people who don't need that power now. Apple's low-end machines from a few years ago are not capable of doing some things average users likely want. My 2.6 or so year old eMac, for instance, can't run the two games my wife and I are most interested in (Civ VI and Sims II), can't run many high-resolution types of video, can't host three-way video chats in iChat, and a whole lot of other stuff, including being slow on various tasks. The point being, I'd like to replace this computer in 6 months or so now that I can afford to. On the other hand, if I'd bought a 2Ghz dual G5 back then, I'd be set for another few years as it would still do more than anything I need. It's a matter of a computer lasting 3 years or 6 (or 2 or 4 or whatever depending on the user's needs). Obviously the eMac and dual G5 are extreme examples, but getting a little future proofing is partly economical, especially when comparing the Mac Pro to an iMac.

I'd wait personally. I'm thinking seriously about buying one next summer (even though I've just bought a Macbook ). Here's why:
-See how people who actually have them review their new system.
-Wait and see if there is any new ACD coming out.
-Maybe Apple will have a better choice of Nvidia graphics sets in a years time.
-I'm sure some sort of update of the Mac Pro will come around the time of Leopards release.
-If you need Frontrow, make sure that Apple has provided some way of getting Frontrow onto the system.
-The compatibility of third party RAM/non-specific GPU's with the MacPro will become clearer - could save you getting ripped off by buying Apple RAM.
-See if the 750GB Seagate HD works in the Mac Pro.

I'd take my own advice but here i am waiting for the new iMac. I'd love the Mac Pro but i really really want front row for when i'm relaxing and listening to music. Plus the whole point of selling my computer was to get a smaller and quieter computer. The Mac Pro would go against that

Of course, the good thing about the Mac Pro is that the upgrade options are so incredibly vast that the above mentioned concern is not nearly as potent as it used to be.
In fact, for me, upgradability is the real innovative feature of this new machine.
there are always going to be issues with computers. when you think about all the sub-systems inside a computer, and how much they rely on each other, its a wonder computers run at all.
My Macbook was suffering from random shutdown issues, and i've had the logic board replaced. Apart from that, it is a perfect machine. The OS is perfect, the integration with the hardware is perfect, i have no staining, whining, etc. I think a vast majority of 1st Rev Intel Mac owners have had a perfect computer straight off.
Point of rant: dont be put off just because its rev. A. The MacPros are awesome machines which will serve you well in some form for several years to come, even when faster stronger bigger chips come out. If I were in your situation, i would have one under my desk now. As said before, you can wait indefinately, because there is always going to be faster machines released in a few months.

Well I can tell you I was in the same boat. Waiting for apple to make a great machine and on Monday they did. I got a MacPro and a 30" Cinema and just got applecare for them. I can tell you though, I have been beating this system all day and night and I can't find a single thing wrong with it. Really well designed. I say go for it.
