New Mac Pro want to use old LED display

Hiya fellas,

Some folks I work with are upgrading their old G4 desktops and are getting a couple of new Mac Pro six Core 3.5's. I am trying to figure out if it is possible for them to use their Apple LED Cinema Displays. I know the displays have mini DisplyPorts, and the Mac Pro has the thunderbolt 2 and an HDMI port. They are graphic designers. I tried to talk them into laptops, but their boss doesn't want laptops walking off.

It is my understanding that although the LED display can be plugged in to the thunderbolt 2 port, it is not compatible. Is there a cable adapter that would work? Or am I off base here?

It seems imprudent to buy 5 year old Mac Pros today with the new "modular" Mac coming around the corner especially when it seems that the organization does not prioritize keeping up with upgrades.
If these are the old displays with the ADC connector that came out 18-19 years ago when the G4 was new, they will not work. They're also not worth using when modern displays are so much better, for so little money.

I agree about buying a machine that will be out of date, but these guys can't wait.

The Apple LED Cinema Displays are about 5 years old. AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB graphics to be exact.

They weren't using G4s, then, so you've got some confusing information in your post.
The 24/27" LED Cinema displays with the mini Displayport connector are fully compatible with the 2013 Mac Pro.
It's not that the current Mac Pro "will be" out of date, it has been out of date for several years. The iMac Pro is a much better computer and a better value.

You are correct, they are running a couple of G5's.

Even the G5 wouldn't work with those displays so they're likely just older Mac Pros, which makes the idea of upgrading them to "new" Mac Pros make even less sense.
Edit: the Radeon 6750M is a MacBook Pro (portable) GPU, so I have no idea what computers we're talking about. Did you mean MacBook Pro?
