It’s been so long since Apple refreshed the Mac Pro that a number of reports have speculated the machine is set to be killed off. But it’s still available from the Apple store, and according to a new report, it’s going nowhere. In fact, it’ll soon to get a refresh that will introduce Intel’s Ivy Bridge processor and the new Kepler GPU from NVIDIA.

According to sources for M.I.C. Gadget, overheating issues that Apple previously had with the desktop have now been resolved thanks to Intel’s new Ivy Bridge chip which is set to make its debut in April:

Well, we have some good news, Intel will be moving to its Ivy Bridge platform in April, and this will solve heating issues. How does it do that? Well, with its 22nm (extremely efficient) manufacturing process, it is very efficient in operation in comparison to the previous Sandy Bridge. More importantly, the old transistor types are gone, and replaced by “tri-gate” transistors. According to our sources, those transistors are 30%+ more efficient with heat dissipation.

Thanks to Apple’s partnership with Intel, the company has already received engineering samples of the new processors, according to sources, which boast 8 cores and 20MB of cache.

Additionally, the Mac Pro’s GPU will also be updated to NVIDIA’s new Kepler platform which is due out around the same time. Apple is said to have been “burned” by the Mac Pro’s existing ATI graphics, which are prone to flickering, overheating, and other failures.

The M.I.C gadget article reads like someone has a bit of knowledge from tech sites and wrote up what they think they know.
 
It would allow them to possibly go with a smaller case if there is less heat and depending on how much heat the graphics card puts out. In any case I just like the fact that any article even simply mentions the Mac pro anymore.
 
Sandy Bridge-EP isn't even out yet, and Ivy Bridge-EP won't be out until Q4'12 at the earliest, although we are most likely looking at H1'13 release. Even with some kindergarten thinking, one should realize that this rumor is as false as it can get.

I don't know about overheating, but I have a 2008 and a 2010. The 2008 puts out enough heat to be able to turn off my heating in my house and recirculate the hot air form the Mac Pro to warm the entire house. The 2010 is much better though.

Yeah you have two of the hottest processors that ended up in the Mac Pro and perhaps the hottest graphics card? Can't remember how hot the 285 runs.
 
Yeah this article is complete B.S. Apple either kills off the Mac Pro when the Sandy Bridge-E processors come out, or they update the line. They aren't going to "wait" until the Ivy Bridge-E processors come out in another year. They wouldn't be competitive with any work station desktops for the next year. The reason Apple gets slack right now for not updating their MP's is that there aren't any processors to update to. Imagine the back lash if they skipped the a whole generation of processors and waited 3 years to update their flagship computer?

It either gets Sandy Bridge-E or it kills off the line entirely. My guess is the former.
 
yeah, I don't know what "overheating" they're talking about. older MP's ran hotter, but none overheated. power and heat went down significantly back in 2009.

No, the G5 wasn't literally a Mac Pro, it was the functional equivilant.
But you knew that.

If Apple wanted a smaller case they would only need to go with the upcoming E3 1200 v2's .

The 1225 , 1245, and 1275 would make it easy to bundle Thunderbolt with the box since they come with integrated graphics. Just couple the remaining 4x PCI-e lanes from the CPU package with the IGP graphics and the TB implementation problem solved.

The only major issue is how does it get priced so that it doesn't cannibalize iMac sales. (e.g., in the $1899-2499 range). However, that really isn't a "Mac Pro" replacement as much as a partial answer for a small (but perhaps significant) segment of the price sensitive xMac folks.

However, those are distinctly not 8 core 20MB cache Xeons. It would be the display-less iMac in terms of performance and probably have just one slot for a 16x connector GPU card.

The "heat problem" isn't solved though with 22nm and "trigate" implementation. It is solved by the fact it is a smaller package with less cores. The 8 core 20 MB cache Ivy Bridge Xeons aren't going to limbo down into a substantially lower power range either. The lower power consumption would far more likely be used to bump up the clock rates higher.


Apple needs to either find a way to work the Mac Pro prices down to the $2,000 border with the iMac or come up with a slightly different box to put into the $2,000-2,500 gap.

or they could just lower the imac pricing schedule to make room.
