Hey everyone, I'm about to launch a mac website dedicated to the french mac community (canada and europe). This is a mockup of the design made by a designer I'm paying. What should I tell him to change / redo?

Any suggestion is welcome! I personally think he's using too much pastel colors...

First, I'd suggest that it actually be in French. :)

I'd change the "logo" to look more like an iMac, drawing a bigger connection to the mac community. Neither the mark nor the name suggest anything mac-ish, so some attention could be paid there.

The colors are alright. Everyone has different tastes and you as the owner will need to decide if you'd like different colors. They are just "okay" for me.

I'd like to see more negative space though. The site seems kind of cramped.

Don't worry, it'll be in french (the designer doesn't know french and it's only a mockup...). This isn't the logo neither, just there to fill the blank).
And, do you think there's too much news site for Apple, especially in french? Or you think it's a good idea?

I think it looks great. One thing that strikes me is that the colours are too varied. Keep just a select few colours and perhaps more neutral font colours and it'll look better. :)

Mouais.

Did that make sense? I really fancied giving my dodgy French a dust off. :D Anyway, I think the contrast by the black does make a difference - it wouldn't even have to be black, any darker shade would do. (I didn't know how to say that in French!) It looks stylish and readable though.

Did my french make any sense at all? :D I was crap at school, but have tried to brush up a bit on holidays and the like.

Everything was perfect except the last sentence, pretty good!

Cool, I'm glad it wasn't too bad. I imagine "busy" doesn't have the same sort of double meaning, or something. Anyway, this isn't a French discussion, so I'll go off and learn more, and good luck with your site. Be sure to post a link when it's finished, as I'd like to see the final design, and I'm sure our French speaking readers would like to see it.

Site will be released within next week, any chance someone has access to a PC to see if it looks as good in Windows (IE / Firefox)?
Thanks!

Also, tell me if you like the result...

I like it quite a bit, especially the subtle texturing you threw in the shadow boxes...very nice.

I think it's good. I'll stop there to keep my own opinion separate from a functional/factual standpoint.

The biggest issue the site faces is squished content syndrome. SCS is very common these days, and to anyone with a screen resolution greater than 800x600, it's painful. I think that it could at least be a liquid layout to allow for some longer line lengths. The two sidebars are so invasive, that the content is almost lost. Free it up a tad, and it will be much, much more functional (and easier on the eyes).

As for my personal opinion, I'm a bit surprised at the color choice. Maybe it's a regional thing, and maybe you're intentionally bucking the trend, but most Apple-related sites use a white-silver/grey-black and shade of blue color scheme. The choice to use (a) green as the primary color to me is... well... it just hasn't won me over.

C'est une très bonne conception. L'avez-vous faite?

La page marche bien dans Firefox.

(SVP, excusez mon français. J'étudie le français pendant deux ans, alors je ne le parle pas très bien.)

C'est tres bien (i don't know how to do an e with an accent grave in tres :D )
I think that it should have more pictures though...
Alt-~ gives you an accent grave, then type the letter you want accented. :)
