Just received the Mac Studio max and it’s fast. However, when I boot up the computer, the monitor is on but no picture comes up, only a dark on screen. I have to unplug and plug back in the hdmi cable and that seems to work. Any idea why this might happen?

I have a Samsung Cj79 and it worked with my PC, and I’m using the same hdmi cable. I ordered a thunderbolt cable only to find out my model didn’t come with TB ports…

The Samsung CJ79 that I'm looking at on the Samsung website has a TB3 port for the monitor (and another for charging something) under a panel on the back.

Also, someone in the reviews says it needs a 40Gbps Thunderbolt cable to the computer if you want to daisy chain monitors…but that user is probably on a PC and I don't know if that's even possible with a Mac.

I’m sorry it’s actually cf791. Had to check the receipt. I believe the new model now comes with two TB ports but not mine. Still a wonderful picture (tho the new Samsung 49” oled is calling me)

I’m not that computer savvy but I don’t think I’m daisy chaining monitors. I’m gonna toss the PC.

Make sure you always power on the monitor before the Mac Studio.

If that is not working:
I don't have a solution but a workaround, if you have atleast one display connected that gets on create a Mission Control Hot Cornor with "Put Display to Sleep". When activate the hot cornor it should enable your hdmi display again. It is a bit messy but prevents the port from wear-out.
You can also set modifier key(s), so the cornor only triggers when you hold down that key(s) before.

Thanks I’ll try that tonight. I did find online other people with this problem, and one person brought it into apple and they did a 10 min. “Software revive” which fixed the problem. I might end up doing that before I start really setting up the computer in case they wipe it clean.

You mentioned hdmi cable, I would try using a Displayport cable instead since hdmi is really only meant for televisoins and not computer displays. You'll also get the benefit of it turning on automatically on boot, and turning off after shutdown/sleep. If you want to keep using hdmi then it's possible the cable you have doesn't meet the specs of the display and need a modern version.

I use a USB-C to Displayport cable for my LG 4K monitor as the main display on my Mac Studio M1 with no issues.

I have a second monitor connected, an HP 1080p via HDMI, that occasionally displays static when it wakes up. A power cycle clears that up.

What inputs does the display have?

If it has displayport, try a USBc (Mac) to displayport (display) cable.
Or, you might try a USBc (Mac) to HDMI (display) cable.

If it has DVI, try an HDMI (Mac) to DVI (display) cable.

Also, check the display's internal settings (via its own menu).
If the input source is set to HDMI, try switching it to auto.
If the input source is set to auto, try setting it to HDMI.

Thank you to all the comments, these are some great ideas! There was an HDMI looking port on the back that was a different name, maybe it was a DP? I’ll have to check again.

Also I’ll try to check the displays internal menu. If I can avoid bringing it into a store that would be great.

Just an update, purchased a usb-c to display port and that did the trick. Don’t know why this was so tricky, I feel apple products should just work. Hdmi cables are pretty standard for monitors I think.

Thanks for the help.

I have this same BULL%HIT issue with my M1 Studio, I had the same crap with my Mac Mini M1, wish the morons would sort it out. It was working fine for awhile and now decides it wants to be a little b!tch again

I replaced the cable (that worked fine on every non Apple system), no issues at all since then. 15$ fix.

This is a real problem with the Thunderbolt ports on the studio -- the power supply is definitely under-spec'd to the ports, especially considering the # of peripherals "pro" users are likely to have attached to the thing.

I have a new M2 Max and attempted to use the thunderbolt ports to attach two monitors via USB-C (a Dell 32" 4k and a Gigabyte 32U / 32" 4K), and they both would not turn on reliably.

Plugging each first into a powered Thunderbolt hub and running the USB-C cable worked fine. It is an expensive workaround though :(

Hope Apple corrects this next time around.
