Hello. I read that Bootcamp does not support Vista running on the new MacBook Air. Anybody succeed in installing Vista Ultimate 64-bit on the new MBA?

Think its W7 only

Officially, that is the answer. However, others were able to get 64-bit Windows 7 working on the last generation Air, which wasn't supported by Boot Camp. I'd imagine getting Vista to work can be done, but it's possible that you'll be running less than optimal drivers (i.e. generic Vista drivers) and won't get as good performance as with native Boot Camp drivers.

At a basic level, I agree with Poster 3 that Win 7 is far better than Vista, but I also don't understand why Apple didn't ship Boot Camp with Vista drivers for the Air. Axing XP support I get (it's a 9 year old OS that even Microsoft has been trying to get rid of). But a lot of Mac users may have fairly recent Vista discs and don't want to shell out $200 for a Windows 7 CD if they have a working Vista CD.

:D

To be fair, Vista SP1 isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be (that's what I have on my office PC). It isn't as nice as OS X or even Windows 7, but the issues people had with it in the beginning were mostly because Microsoft foolishly let PC manufacturers slap "Vista Capable" stickers on all kinds of PCs that had no business running anything as resource intensive as Vista. It would be like Apple slapping "Lion Capable" on a Core Solo-equipped MacBook ca 2006 and releasing it today.

A new MacBook Air is capable enough to run Vista without any major problems, and Apple ought to have accommodated Vista since the drivers for Windows 7 and Vista aren't all that different. Some Mac users need Windows occasionally, which is why Apple issues Boot Camp in the first place.

Thanks. I shall wait for users of the new MBA to try out Vista 64-bit on their machines first before buying.

haha I know, I know, I was simply joking

although my issues with it when it first came out weren't due to my PC not being able to run it (it killed it), but rather all my hardware other than the main computing components becoming unusable, with absolutely no commitment from the manufacturer to update their drivers...it was all 2 years old or younger too, you'd think they'd keep it working

but no, I install vista, and have to replace a capture card, fingerprint scanner, wifi usb stick, and something else I don't remember what now

plus, it never seemed to do what I wanted it to do

No one is going to try it out they are going to install 7.

Oh no! I have a PC at work running Windows 7 64-bit. I found the user interface not as straight forward as former versions of Windows. So, I prefer to use Vista which has been stable and fine. It may be my own personal preference though...
