I opened my brand new MacBook Air that I purchased from MacMall a few minutes ago. I installed iStat Pro right when I opened it, and the battery cycles say 9. What the?? Any explanations?

Mmm, my Ultimate MBA refurb showed up with 3 cycles on the battery. Coconut said it was 3 weeks old when I received it.

It must've been opened and used already. Just bought 2 MBA's from the Apple Store in a span of two weeks and they both were 0 cycles on Coconut Battery.

The age of the Mac is taken from the manufacturing date. I double checked this by looking up my serial number to find out my machines manufacturing date. It totally matched Coconut Battery's claims.

Based on the cycle count you're getting, I suggest you find out if you've gotten a refurb or a repackage.

Wait - so you are spending hours of your life over whether you new Air has 0 or 3 or 9 cycles out of thousands? Really? Is there anything else wrong with it?

One would think a new one would have fewer cycles than a refurb, not more.

I highly doubt it took him hours to generate this thread.

That's what I'm saying. 9 cycles for a new computer? I mean it doesn't bother me if the battery is like that. I'm just hoping this isn't a refurbished model when I bought it new. Can I tell if it's refurbished by looking up my serial number?

I have a refurb 11.6" MBA and it came with 4 cycles on the battery. I'm not sure if all the MBA serial numbers are (new & refurb) are the same or different, but the first few characters of my serial number are C2QF3...

Mine are different. Coconut battery says my computer is 11 weeks old and 9 cycles. I'm not worried I just want to know I didn't get sold a refurb as new from one of Apple's online authorized retailers.

Well I called and they agreed to give me a refund. In the meantime I ordered a new one, and got the upgraded one with 4GB RAM. Hope it doesn't have the same problem.

It was actually MacMall, but I mean they're an authorized reseller.

Good job! That is good customer service from MacMall. I used to deal with them years ago but don't anymore because of customer service issues. Now it makes sense why you got a "new" MBA with 9 cycles on the battery... It came from MacMall and it wasn't "new".

Yeah. It was in original packaging and everything, but from what I've heard and read they're customer service is way better than it used to be. Which is definitely a good thing.

Any place but here or there....
this just happened to me tonight

I just posted a separate thread about this since I couldn't find it with MRoogle.

Coconut battery showed up 9 cycles and this was a sealed "brand new" MBA 13" Ultimate at an Apple store.

In all the Apple laptops I've bought in the last two weeks all of them had 0 cycles.

If this was a refurb that's not a problem, it wasn't. And for paying full price I want a brand new machine.

What do I tell the folks at the Apple store tomorrow morning outside of showing them the coconut battery results?

Why not show them? System Profiler will show the same information. However, 9 cycles out of 1000 isn't a big deal.

The Coconut Battery age may be incorrect since it's based solely on serial number. Apple changes its serial number algorithm occasionally and Coconut Battery might not be up to date. The battery cycle is a bit more worrying, though. When I got my 13" Ultimate from MacMall it had 0 cycles.

There is such a simple solution. Take it back, get another. Open in the store and check the cycle count.

I am sure that the store has a shrink wrap machine, and rewrapped your laptop without first resetting these things.

Not cool in my book, but from their perspective they probably think...it covered under warranty so whats the big deal.
