Just got a new Macbook Air today. I keep all my music files locally stored on my computer. I am unable to sync my phone's music with the Music app on the computer. It says "unable to read contents of phone. Restore to factory settings" I did that once and am still getting the same message. I was able to sync my ipad music with the computer. Truthfully, I would prefer to use the itunes app but that doesn't seem compatible with the new computer, so I switched my library over to "music". Hopefully someone can help me because I am really at a loss. Also, I did update the phone and ipad to 17.6 this morning. Thanks in advance.

Did you get the "Trust this computer" alert message upon attaching your iPhone? If so, did you press the "Trust" button?

I did not get that message at all. I did for my ipad which maybe explains why that works.

Tried that with no luck. I don't know if the phone is the problem, because I get that error as soon as I open itunes before even plugging the phone in.

There is no iTunes app for M2 MBA, perhaps you mean the Music app. You need to use the Finder. Your iPhone should appear in the list on the left-hand side.
I understand that. I installed itunes from Retrograde because I prefer it to Music. Itunes gives me the error 42408.
Music just keeps telling me I have to restore my phone to factory settings which I have done twice already.

IMO first choice for solving such issues is to call Apple support. But be aware that the level one phone responders are often mostly useless.

Apple is NOT going to help you when you are using an open source third party application to trick the latest macOS into installing and running old, unsupported applications which are not even Apple Silicon native. Call will last 5 minutes if you are lucky.

🤦‍♂️

This thread should have been a bit shorter had the original post already contained all the necessary details...

Also, an unsupported configuration/software not working, what a surprise!

This would've been really helpful information in your original post when you're asking for help...

Well, there’s your problem… iTunes and Music are incompatible, and iTunes is unsupported. You have to convert your library to Music and then sync. Or, look for an alternative to Music that syncs between MacOS and iOS.
