hi I just got a macbook air today and was really excited to get it. But sure enough it had the grey horizontal lines on the display. Is my best course of action to take it back to the apple store on monday and demand a new air and just check it out to make sure the new computer does not have lines, or is there another course of action available to me?

Take it back and ask to see another one before an exchange. Otherwise you can either deal w/the lines as many have done, or return it for a model that isn't plagued w/horrible displays.

I hear what you're saying and I agree. I'd take it back and just get another--see if that one is good or not. I think I just might have received a "better than most" display and I can only see the lines if I look really close and look for them.

take it back ASAP same thing happened to me with my UMB.

if you call apple they will just have you take the battery out and drain the power from the board by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds and then reboot. if clearing ht epower didn't work. i mean why wouldn't you exchange it. i went in to apple and they gave me a new one inside 15 minutes.

i deff booted it up before leaving and checked everywhere on the screen for about 20 minutes.

it was a hour and 15 minute drive there. so 2.5 hours twice to get this beautiful computer.

i think it was worth it. but i was so upset when i got home the first night after saving up for this for about a month.

turning it on, watching the video. and.... lines.

How do you take the battery out of a MBA?

Don't let them give you the runaround when you go to your appointment. You just purchased the machine. If they say they need to spend a week repairing it or whatever tell them you demand a refund/exchange immediately instead.

well my genius appointment is at 2:00 so i will update you guys.

DON'T accept ANYTHING other than a brand NEW MBA in the box identical to the one you are giving them only without lines. DON'T accept a "replacement" that is not brand new off the shelf. The ones they have in plain boxes in the back are refurbished replacement models. Make them give you new box to have matching serial numbers and all. A guy I saw return one had them try to give him a different one from behind counter and he refused and said wanted brand new off the shelf and got it.

My advice is to be extremely polite but firm that the lines are there and this is a brand new $1799 or $2499 MacBook Air that DOESN'T state on the box that the display is afflicted with horizontal lines. Therefore, you should expect and accept ONLY a lineless MacBook Air. If the "genius" gives you any crap, explain that you are shocked that Apple would expect you to accept a brand new $1799 to $2499 MacBook Air with lines on it.

Godspeed!

Same way you do on the new 17".

1. Unscrew and remove the bottom panel.
2. Remove the battery.

Would an Apple customer service rep really "talk you through" that over the phone? I don't know... I think maybe was referring to a MB or MBP??? But maybe??? Anyone ever experience that with a MBA? There should be a way to cable disconnect the MBA and 17" MBP without fully removing the bottom panel. Think about it, they could easily add a switch that "hard pulls" the two ends of the cables apart and slides them back together. Would be a simple engineering example that seemingly would make sense and frankly, I am surprised it isn't already there. A lot of people are "programmed" to think remove the battery... seems to have actual application and a simple slider at the bottom of both models could do it without cracking the case open.

Just my two cents.

ok just got back from the apple store, got a brand new air and it is much better then the old one, now the only thing you can see is the individual leds. Asked several geniuses opinion and they all said it looked perfect, and i agreed. I am very happy with it :D

Surely not. I was told that thin grey lines were a characteristic of a thin, brightly lit screen.

Congratulations. In all other regards it is a great machine, vastly underated and compared to its competitors (Vaio TT, Lenovo X301) better built, better specced (in key areas) and cheaper.

I'm sure they all would've said your old display w/the lines looked perfect too :) Congrats on getting it worked out, glad you ended up w/a good display.

Great work. Don't worry about what others think. You are forking out the big dough. You are going to be working on your MBA baby daily.

Congratulations with the new MBA. They sure are beautiful, and when they don't have lines, they sure are fun!

Cheers.

First off, congrats on the successful exchange; I'm glad you got new line.

My Story: I bought a new Air 9c90 with feint lines about 20 or so days ago. I'm past my reasonable exchange period, but I'd like to know whether or not some of you with the issue have decided solely to deal with it?

I'm usually a perfectionist, but in this situation I'm just scared to get one with something I would consider worse ( a dead or stuck pixel etc...) What do some of you think?
