I have a 2017 macbook air with usb-c connectivity. I have since got an iphone 15 and new kindle and it is very convenient that they are all USB-C. I am now considering buying a new macbook air and having visited the apple store found out that they are now magsafe, which I had on my first macbook air in 2011!!! Do you think this magsafe is here to stay or just an apple fad and in a couple of models they will go back to something else?

I don’t own one of the MagSafe Macbooks, but I think it would make sense to keep it around. The new MagSafe is better than 2011’s for sure, and the fact that they came back to it after all this time would indicate that this is a lasting push from Apple. We can’t be certain though.

The anomaly is the non-magsafe. Apple went to magsafe with all their laptops after going to intel (2006 and later)
Your MBAir has always been magsafe, until the 2018 intel, continuing to the M1 processor. Apple returned to Magsafe with the M2 processor, and has now included magsafe in the next 3 Airs. I think you can safely say that Apple will likely continue with some kind of MagSafe--nearly 20 years makes that one of the common areas that Apple might stay with.

I think it’s here to stay at at least I hope so! I absolutely love MagSafe and remember it from my old MacBook. I was quite upset when they removed it.

However, you might be slightly disappointed as I was. When I had my old MacBook with MagSafe, it had an Intel processor. It required to be plugged in more often than not so the MagSafe was very helpful. The new Apple Silicon laptops will run off battery pretty much all day. I wasn’t really using the MagSafe feature like I was with my old MacBook.

You can charge the new MagSafe MacBooks via USB-C too, if that's what you're concerned about. The MagSafe port on mine is on an inconvenient side for my setup so I stuck with the same Thunderbolt (USB-C) cable I used for charging my previous MacBook.

Thanks for the advice. I didn’t realise I can still use a usb c charger.

My first Apple computer was a MacBook Air that had MagSafe. I tripped over the power cord often enough that I was grateful for it. When I started shopping for a new Mac, I initially researched MagSafe-like add-ons. Then the MacBookPro came out with it, which is what I bought. I have not (yet) tripped over my MacBookPro's power cord, but maybe that is just because of where I placed it.
