Does anyone think it is probable that Apple will release an updated Macbook around the time Leopard is released? It would have been about six months since the last Macbook update...

You see, I really do not have much money and cannot afford anything more than the lowest model Macbook... and that's if I use my student discount and my $200 apple gift card. I want to wait until leopard is released because it should be less than 2 months from now and it seems to be a great update to Tiger.

I have been holding off purchasing a Macbook not only because I have not had the cash but also because Leopard's release was coming up soon. Another reason I have not purchased one was because the lowest model macbook *still* does not have dvd-writing capabilities. In my opinion I really think this should be a standard feature on ALL computers. I mean come on, -DVD writers are cheap as hell. I don't care about the extra speed of the next model up, the larger hard drive or the fancy black color. I simply want to be able to write dvd disks without an external drive.

I understand apple wants to make money but seriously... not including a dvd drive on the lowest macbook (which is still a lot more expensive than a comparable pc laptop at circuit city, best buy, office depot etc.) is nothing more than a cheap trick to force people into buying the midrange model. How can you not include a dvd writer and then make people pay $200 extra for that. Yeah the next model has a bigger hard drive and a slightly faster CPU but come on! Ok, I'm done talking about that...

I think the next macbook refresh should include the following:
- LED screens for all Macbook models
- DVD writers on all models (yes you knew that was coming)
- A more recent chipset for all models
- slightly faster speeds would be nice but I won't complain if at least the other three I mentioned above are introducted.
- Updated graphics... It doesn't have to be nearly as good as the macbook pro, but at least something a little more usable for games...

Even if there are no other features added except for the ones I mentioned above I would be happy and will buy a Macbook when it is released. Otherwise I might have to stick to buying a PC laptop... and I really don't want to do that. At least include a damn dvd writer so I can burn my home videos!!!

Well, if you can afford that one now, keep saving and maybe you'll have enough for the middle model, which should be more rewarding.

But yes, I do agree that DVDRW should soon be standard on notebooks. You can get one for dirt cheap at CircuitCity, though they ARE Windows machines.

Hope that helps

I am waiting for the next macbook update as well and I am hoping it will be before Christmas. I wouldn't bet on October but a late November wound be perfect with leopard and a push for the xmas sales.

I would think that they will make them with led's and use santa rosa in 2.0 and 2.2 models and then use the new intel graphics. Along with leopard they should be a nice upgrade.

I don't seriously expect to see another update to the MacBook this year. Apple are going to great pains to differentiate the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Until the MacBook Pro can be given a significant update I doubt the MacBook (or the Mac Mini) are going to see any change. They are both "64-bit" ready (though they cannot access more than 2 GBs of memory the CPUs have all the other enhancments that come with the 64-bit extensions to the x86 design) - ready for Leopard.

Apple are getting set for the back to school/holiday season. The MacBook has been updated. The Mac Mini has been updated. The MacBook Pro has been updated. The iMac has been updated. I expect next month the iPod range will receive a refresh. Aside from that, we have had all the mac updates we can expect for 2007 - with the possible exception of an update to the MacPro in November (Apple may wait until the new year though).

You can't expect to have anything than basic gaming performance on a Macbook, and by basic I mean solitaire. It's an integrated graphics chipset, it's not made for gaming, and apple doesn't market it toward that user group. Sure you can load Half Life 2 on there, but you'll be running it at the absolute rock bottom settings, with 20 fps. Yea you're running it, but why bother.

If you want something for gaming, buy an xbox, use a desktop pc (which can be found cheap used on craigslist), or get a higher end mac.

Yea, they should all have DVD writers, but sitting around hoping for all of that other junk on your list to come true will only leave you dissapointed.

Since you've stated that you're opting to wait until the Leopard release, save some extra money and buy the midrange model.

An update sometime in November is likely. That's when the macbooks were updated last year, and it seems to fit nicely with the current cycle length. Since you're a poor student, I would suggest waiting a bit longer. If you have a working computer, keep going with it. Try to save up and buy the middle model when you're ready. My advice is to put the money you have now ($800 I assume) and open a high paying savings account(ING offers some that are good--4.5%, and there's no minimum, you can withdraw anytime), this way you can still earn some interest to help you out(though on $800, it's only going to be about $3 a month, still better than nothing). Keep working and save as much as you can. Even if you only put aside $10 per week for your computer, you can save up enough to buy the mid range model by Christmas. Plus, there's the advantage of an update. Should one happen while you're saving up, you'll be able to buy an updated product with Leopard. This gives you the random chance that Apple will finally put a DVD burner in the low end macbook:rolleyes:

apple plz!! update

dude i totally agree with u about the dvd and the graphics, im mean common were paying over $1200 for a crappy old intel graphics card , common apple watz up with that? we should petition for a new update coming with a dvd burner in all base models and a better graphics card, also an improvement on the fans!! lol :)
