Hi everyone,

Do you have any suggestions for some protection cases for the new MacBook Pro 14 inch? Also, some suggestions of keyboard protection or screen protection will also be useful.

Any mainstream sleeve for a 13” laptop will work. Avoid keyboard protectors, they can damage the display.

This MacBook is 14”. How would the 13” one work for this Mac? Also, I’m using a keyboard protector for my 2019 MacBook and I had no problems with it till now. Why do you think it will damage the display?

IIRC, Apple has advised against keyboard covers since 2016.

“If you use a camera cover, palm rest cover, or keyboard cover with your Mac notebook, remove the cover before closing your display to prevent damage to your display.”

Physical size is almost the same as previous 13” (smaller bezels make that happen)

The 14” is just 5mm larger than the old 13”, with basically the same thickness. If you have a flexible sleeve that fits a 13”, it will fit the new 14”.

Regarding keyboard protector: the gap between the keys and the display is very small. There were cases of display cracking or developing other defects.

I’m looking for a case for the new 16 inch. I haven’t seen anything on manufacturers sites for 14 inch either. I would think the different shape of the laptop base and port configuration means they’ll need to make new designs. I wonder if apple partners with anyone to get cases out early, or if there’ll be a long delay.

When you talk about “cases” do you mean a plastic protective case that is permanently attached to the machine or do you mean a sleeve for transport? If it’s the later, any sleeve for a 15” laptop will work for the 16” model. If you are looking for a hard protective case instead you’ll have to wait until manufacturers start offering them. Frankly, I never understood why people use them… makes the laptop bulkier, destroys the aesthetics and does very little to actually protect it.

It has always been a long standing that accessories for new models are never available as soon as the new models are released. You'll always have a 3-5 week gap between new models and accessories, and trying to make something that may work for a previous model work for a new model may not work at all.

Case in point: I've had my mid-2011 13" MBA in TwelveSouth's BookBook case for the past 10 years. There is no way I would expect it or any other 13" case to fit the 14" MBP that I am planning to buy, nor should it. I'd have to wait until something for it is available, but it is a hard sell of any manufacturer to have something for this out the week that new Macs are launched. They'll need time. So give them time, and see what comes up that will suit.

I have a hard clip on case on my 13" Macbook Pro. It protects it from scuffs and knocks and adds very little to the bulk. Personal choice.

I was particularly interesting in a plastic one, as I have a good one from UAG for my actual 15 inch MacBook Pro and it was very well protected.

Thanks. I suspected that sort of delay might be so. I lost one MB pro to impact damage when travelling and have used a hard case since. I’m kind of tempted to see if there are plugs to fill unused ports as well. Between children and cat hair, they never stay pristine.

There are a some appearing on Amazon such as this one, which is 'in stock' or this one with an availabilty date of 20th Nov 2021 - but they're coming from the far east, so delivery will be a couple of weeks.

Not expensive, £16.99 seems to be the stadard price. Might just order one - not much to lose, if it's not up to snuff...

I can only find a few on Etsy, here is one for 16 inches, though I am hunting one for the 14 inch myself.
Gradual Printing Abstract Mountains Landscape Shell Hard Case | Etsy
They released a few cases for 14” and 16” MPB: https://www.kloegcom.nl/macbook-pro-14-inch-cases

Another one for the 14”: Case Compatible with MacBook Pro 14 Inch 2021 M1 Pro/Max Model A2442, Plastic Hard Shell Protective Case Cover for MacBook Pro 14 Inch with Touch ID - Black https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09LHR6G1K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_AS7H2KGAS02NSC3B45HG

I eventually went for this one at £14.99 on eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HARD-SHE...4-INCH-2021-A2442-CRYSTAL-CLEAR-/363654255398

Very happy with it..

The 14" is the same size as the 13" but a completely different shape. Sleeves you put the laptop in are compatible, but hard cases which clip on are obviously not.

I bought a generic matte finish hardcase for my 16" which really helps with holding it compared to the slippery aluminum.

Hard shell cases are a bit controversial as they can scratch MacBooks when grit gets inside.

Personally I use good quality hard shells on smaller laptops which I travel with, as the grit is the lesser evil over the knocks and dings I otherwise seem to put in them.

The only ones I would really recommend are those made by Incase, which you can get on the Apple Store (in the UK at least) for less money than they are available for on Incase's own site.

Sitting here with both a 13 inch and a 14 inch pro, I can clearly see they are not the same size! The 14 inch one is thicker as well as bigger.
