Dear all

I am in a bit of a predicament with buying a new MBP, I have saved up to buy a new MBP towards late summer 2018 (still have the money) I heard a rumour that Apple may renew the MBP in 2019 so I decided to hang on a bit longer!

I cannot see any movement at all by Apple to replace their existing MBP so what do I do? Shall I just buy the latest one and be done with it?

Any advice will help.

Peter

This is a very good question. Might be worth waiting. Price could even do down on older models when new comes out

Its all down to need...
If you can wait, then wait, but that new one will soon be replaced by another anyway.
But if you need it now, just go buy it!

They typically refresh MBPs between July - October. So if you think you can wait as much as 7 months and need the very latest and greatest, I'd take the chance.

However, for that strategy to pay off you'd need to buy one the day they announced it. You'll pay full price then. If $ is more of an issue, I'd suggest going bargain hunting right now. The current design is starting to see some pretty substantial discounts (I think I've seen as much as $500 for certain configs).

Thanks Tim, trouble is I could be waiting another year lol
Apple usually doesn't wait more then a year, so there's good reason to expect something from them in 2019. I would wait through the summer and if nothing shows up by then, you have your answer.

I am purchasing a brand spanking new Macbook air from 2017, that laptop has the power and speed to run my daily tasks, a keyboard that types and an option to switch a ssd hd if needed. That MBA is the last laptop not to have issues like the the newer ones have. since i did not get the video editing contract to produce the newest starwars® move, i can live without the 64 GB Ram and that 24 TB parcpet ssd turbo hard drive. deluxe.
i hope this helps, just don't buy mine!!

And a screen from 2008.
[doublepost=1553775793][/doublepost]I think it all depends on what you need it for OP. I don't see Apple deviating away from the current design outside of shrinking the bezels giving a slightly larger screen. Other than that there is always going to be updates every year as tech progresses so you'll constantly be waiting if you always want the latest and greatest.

The screen is sharp, vibrant and looks good next to a retina mba, i had a hockey game highlights playing side by side and the retina was sharper, but not by that much! I kinda like the bezel outside the frame and the increase in height helps show photoshop menus more than the retina, and i can upgrade the ssd if needed,
so stick that up your usbc drive!

They both have the same aspect ratio and default viewing area (1440x900) so you're not getting any more photoshop. In fact you can set the retina to display to like 1680x1050 which is a huge increase in viewable area.

I'm happy you're happy but I think you're crazy if you think the old MBA screen is anything but worse in every way. I couldn't go back. It's still a nice machine though and that's why my 2017 Air went to my lady friend.

OP:

If you can wait, wait. If you can't buy what fulfills your needs now. Objectively you'll find better values on other Windows machines or deals on Macs but honestly there's not a Mac in the lineup that isn't good. They have compromises as all tools do.

Frankly, if you're looking at 13" models, I've seen the nTB for $999 pretty often. Sure that machine is from 2017 but, you still get an excellent screen and speakers, 4 years of keyboard warranty, and you probably won't eat too much on depreciation if you decide to get rid of it in 2 years. Similarly, the 2018 13" is often available for about $1500 and I've seen $400 to $600 discounts on the 15".

Basically now is a great time to buy a Mac if the current ones are attractive to you. I love mine and if you go through my post history you'll know I've tried many many laptops. Of course, if you want the latest and greatest, you'll be paying full price for whatever comes in June.
