I have a week old MBP 15" SR with the LG superdrive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N). I noticed immediately when I reinstalled the OS that this drive is reading CDs/DVDs more slowly than I would expect. Based on every other optical drive I've used, I would expect to hear the 'jet engine' sound as it reads discs at its maximum speed, but it is always very quiet and seems to read discs slowly. Everything seems to work fine, but I'd just expect a brand new mac to install something from a disc faster than my older machines.

Anyone else seeing this issue? I can't find much info about this drive on Google but did see a post somewhere talking about this.

heres someone from another forums take on it

HL-DT-ST DVD RW GSA-S10N
-Quiet startup
-No RPC-1 firmware yet, but possible in the future
-Reads disc sloooowww
-Reads disc noisily (with loud thuds)
