Hi Everyone,

So, I just purchased my new 16inch MacBook Pro today. Any most have app downloads or accessories I should be purchasing? I already have a Thule sleeve from my old 15inch MacBook so I'll just keep using that for now.

It depends on your needs but for me the following are a must:
- Apps: Hazel, Alfred, Fantastical, Bartender
- Accessories: External monitor, External SSD/HDD for Time Machine backup, ergonomic support to align the screen with your eyes level

Congratulations
Since you now have new MBP with USB-C ports do you need any adapters for stuff you use? Example The 16" doesn't have Ethernet but Apple sells a Ethernet to USB-C adapter. For me I do backups on a regular basis something like CCC with a USB-C based SSD is handy. Take you time deciding what you need it all looks very nice on that screen.

Be sure to upgrade the MacOS to 12.2 soon, that the latest public release Apple has.

I am about to get an AppleCare
I find the screen is hard to clean so I got a screen protector and a keyboard protector
I got a Voova Laptop Sleeve from Amazon
I kept my USB-C/ethernet port Hub from before

Thanks everyone for the responses! Looks like I will be picking up some adapters and of course adding AppleCare!

You may want to do some research on that screen and key board protector. There are some threads dealing with problems from them; especially on the 2020 MBP 16 and 14" models.

I just bought one too. Its amazing. Bought 2 USB to TB adapters and so far that is it. Just enjoying the hell out of this thing, it's like driving a high end sports car.

Superduper or CCC for making full backups, and a big enough external harddrive for that. You'll want to make full backups because then you can restore from that data. Time Machine makes incremental backups, which I don't think can be restored from. Using both would be fine, making daily backups with Time Machine, and full backups less frequently (weekly, twice a month...), it would just come down to how much storage you can backup your data to

For a harddrive, SSD prices are pretty reasonable these days, but standard HDDs tend to be cheaper. Whatever you choose, go for an external drive with high storage and low price rather than read/write speeds, because you don't need speed for backups (you could even just run the backup overnight)

Not essential, but I use Firefox as my main browser for the addons (NoScript is essential for me), and I've heard good things about Brave. I wouldn't use Safari for anything serious unless you use a lot of OS integrated features, and Chrome is Google, so that's out...

This won't really be relevant to a modern Mac, but I still use Adium on my older Macs and really hope it gets an update to support more modern chat apps (Discord, especially). I'd also really miss being able to run Growl and combine that with things like Prowl (to send notifications to my iPhone), so I hope a successor shows up

Do you backup time machine and super duper on the same drive? And if yes, do you also put files on that drive or dedicate it just for backup? trying to figure out the size of the drive (s) I'd get. I'd love to have one drive for media that I can pull off and on to the MacBook.

What size is your device? And what size is your Voova? I received Voova "11-12.5in" product just now. The title suggests the sleeve is too small for use with MBP14. But the sleeve's internal dimensions are bigger than the MBP14 dimensions. Sad to say: MBP14 doesn't fit!

I have the 16/M1 and I now use a leather bag because I have to go to work twice a week.

Never ever do this!!! You lose "that" drive through corruption or whatever reasons, and lose two forms of backup all at once. SD or CCC is great to have a 1:1 bootable copy in case of total loss. TM I'd recommend a much larger capacity drive, to be able to revert to any previous versions. Two totally different forms of backup really.

Edit: good grief. I once again fell for an older, resurrected thread.

My recommendation is to use it, and find short comings or things that you want to do but cannot.

There's a lot of great recommendations but we're not you, and only you know your needs. My list of apps that I rely on is quite different then others.

For apps, I'll recommend looking at
Office (because Pages/numbers if horrible imo)
Adobe Acrobat, preview is great but you may need more features
iStat Menus
Omni DiskSweeper
Parallels

For carrying cases, I really love products from Waterfield

Hubs, consider a USB-C hub, and cables to carry for just in case needs.
