Moderators: I just saw the sticky thread meant for this sort of announcement. I tried to move this one there, but can't seem to. Could you move this please, and my apologies for posting in the wrong place.

Just ordered a new MacBook Pro: 16" display, M3 Pro, 18 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, and the rest of the specs are MacBook Pro standard. It was FINALLY time to retire my 2008 MacBook Pro, still running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It has served me well for a very long time, but can no longer do most things on web and email... it's Core2Duo CPU just doesn't have the needed umphh.

Regrettably, having ordered directly from Apple, I must now wait a few weeks for it to be delivered. Can't wait! I'll post a photo or two when it arrives!

So weak, the 2008 MBP still had so much life left;)

I've come from a mid-2009er, 2nd SSD, 3.06 GhZ (I'm typing on now) and bought a 2023 M2 Pro Max 16" MBP, the difference is obviously not comparable. It was a BTO as am inclined to keep it for many years, so I had the wait also but I'm happy for you as I know what joy such a stupendeous jump actually brings.

Don't worry @Alpha Centauri, the 2008 MBP is not going anywhere! It is still a fine machine; it is just no match for today's web and email. It now becomes a new machine in the retro-computing.com lab, and will be used with the ongoing work there, alongside the gorgeous PowerBook G4 that also had to be retired from active daily use due to insufficient muscle.

Congrats. I had a 16" M1Pro and it was a beautiful machine. Sold it to get a 14" because of need for portability. It's great machine toll but I do miss the screen real estate and bigger palmrest.

Funny, I travelled internationally for work (often 8-12 hour single flights) and I *intentionally* had my employer issue me a 16" laptop, specifically for portability... work portability in this case: the ability to work comfortably on a screen large enough to support productivity despite being in an often cramped airline seat. A few times the screen size did get in the way, but for the most part, it worked well.

Well OK, Apple delivered my new MacBook Pro, with M3 Pro chipset plus 18 GB RAM and 1 TB of SSD, a week and a half early! I am very pleased to say the least.

Subjectively, the machine is beautiful (I went for the Space Black) and it has a solid, well built feeling to it. As always, Apple's hardware is outstanding.

I said I would post a few photos, so here we go:

This is the box as delivered, and before unboxing:

... and here is the beast unboxed and fired up for the first time:

... and finally, here it is again after multiple hours of configuration - the eagle eyed will note that the Dock now sports icons for Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Libre Office, Pixea and the Forklift File Manager.

Congrats! I'm sure you're going to love it! I made a similar upgrade. 2018 15 inch MBP to 14 inch MacBook Pro M3 Pro (18/512). What an upgrade! Yours will be even better. Enjoy😊

Love the large screen! So guess I should go for a new MacBookPro and ditch my 2013 that recently seems to be broken. Screen wouldn’t come on and now won’t boot up at all. I’ll put the repair cost into a new MacBook!

Just an observation for everyone. The wallpaper that shows up in the photos of my new MBP, earlier in this thread, turns out to be "active" wallpaper. It moves around and presumably does other "clever"/CPU-expensive things that are not necessary. I just discovered that this afternoon. Does anyone here remember Microsoft's Active Desktop from back in the Win 9x days?!? It's baaaaack! 😁

Having discovered this, I did now just like I did back then: I turned that nonsense off! In this case, I changed to a static photo for my wallpaper. Why waste CPU cycles and battery on truly useless visual effects?

So... as you enjoy the new Mac that YOU may have just purchased, keep an eye out for those unnecessary features that waste precious battery!

Congrats! Considered the 16" because I had the 15" that I loved dearly years ago, but realized that since I travel often it wouldn't be portable enough for me.

Ah the core 2 duo.. I had one of those in my old gaming desktop. E8400 dual core overclocked to 4.2ghz, was a beast of a machine back in the day lol

My Core2Duo was just 2.2 HGz. It was never particularly fast, but it got the job done. The new MBP subjectively feels every bit as fast as my Mac Studio... it is a SERIOUSLY fast machine!

It is an M3 Pro in the MBP vs. an M1 Max in the Mac Studio. The M3 Pro should in theory be quite a bit faster, but this is also Sonoma on the MBP vs. Monterey on the Mac Studio, and of course, laptop design objectives on the MBP vs. desktop objectives on the Mac Studio. The fact that subjectively they feel more or less the same confirms to me that the M3 Pro is a very fast chipset.

... for now at least. I am sure Apple will inflate macOS with more and more bloat, and in time, even this new screamer will start to feel sluggish. It is the nature of the computing universe regrettably.

Lest I sound "down" on Apple however, I am not. Hey, I just voted with my pocket book and bought another one. Excellent machines... still the best around.

The Sonoma wallpaper? For me it only animates as a screensaver. It does not move around when logged in. Not that I use it of course, not a fan of that shade of green…

I noticed it moving just after I had logged in. Once was enough. That kind of gratuitous waste of CPU cycles makes me crazy - I had to disable it right away.

That shade of green? I agree. I replaced it with the default Mavericks wallpaper, which I have always loved.
