New MacBook: really freaking hot.

I just received my MacBook today and the temperature is ridiculous . This thing could easily burn me if I kept the upper left part on my lap. How the heck can Apple consider this normal operation? My mother's MacBook has absolutely no problems. It gets hot, but not hot enough to be painful.

I have used many Apples and none have exhibited heat like this. My friend's iBook gets a bit warm, and my mother's MacBook gets hot, but my computer is at the point where it is painful to touch the outside. My father shouted when he tried to pick it up. I am not sure whether I will exchange it for another, hopefully less painful MacBook, or get a different Apple computer.

Other problems that I can live with include the mouse clicking at random times, the computer screen not being flush with the bottom, and the moo's when the hard drive is busy. Quality control has gone way down since I first started using Apples.

Send it in for a replacement if you dont think its normal.

Thanks for the suggestion! There's no question I will return it. As I said, my mother's MacBook doesn't get nearly this hot. Hers, which I am typing on right now, is at 54*C. It goes up to the 60's. Mine idles in the high 60's and goes up to the high 70's with Safari and iTunes open. That is over 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Edit: I just tested and opening every program in her dock (11 programs) brings the temperature up to a top of 65*C.

I'd keep it, that way when you get hungry you can turn it over and cook up some bacon and a couple of eggs.

Quality control has gone way down since I first started using Apples.

I have owned two (first lasted 5 years, current one will be 6 in mid-September) and I would agree that there is a decline in quality. Buying nowadays seems to involve more apprehension and plain old luck that you won't be saddled with some of the annoying problems you hear about.

Mine seems to idle at the same temps as yours and it is too hot to use on my lap and almost burns my desk.....I am really considering returning it for a replacement but the problem is I really need a computer right now, how long do you think the turn around if returned would be?

UPS is going to pick it up for a return. It is clearly not in proper working order. The return process takes 7-10 days. This makes me extremely unhappy since I will not have a computer for over a week and my work is entirely computer-based. I may end up ordering another computer before I'm refunded for this one.

Now, the big question: do I try for another MacBook or go for a desktop that's heat won't bother me.
