New MB here (first time mac user as well), i have no whine, no heat issues...BUT, on occasion my macbook won't shutdown in a timely manner. The first time this happened I shut it down manually by pressing down the power button. The second time i waited, maybe 2 minutes, tapped the power button, and maybe 5 seconds later it shut down. This only seems to happen when i have the computer on for a while.

My other issue is with my external speakers. I have some altec 5.1 speakers that work perfectly with my PC....but the volume is probably half as loud when connected to my MB. Maybe the speakers are not mac compatible???

I'm more worried about the shutting down issue...any ideas??

Not sure about the speaker issue, but go into the Energy Saver option in System Prefs and make sure you have your settings correct for sleeping (There are two options here, one for Battery and one for Power Adapter). Your MB will react differently if hooked up to power or on battery according to the settings you have for each power option.

What would be the "correct" settings?? better battery performance for "battery?" and normal for "power adapter"??

I think the other important thing here is that you don't really need to shut down the computer. I've had my mac for almost two years now and that was one of the first things that someone told me on here when I was looking in to getting one. Someone could probably provide more insight into this, but as far as I know it's best to just put the computer to sleep. I have no idea about the speakers though... seems weird, I don't think there is such a thing as non-mac compatible speakers. Perhaps there are such things, but i think the 1/8" stereo jack is a universal sort of thing
