Good info right here.

e've been talking about a "MacBook Thin" since before Apple transitioned its laptops to the Intel platform -- and it looks like the long-awaited Macintel ultra-thin, ultra-portable speed king is heading to market at last!

Speculation has been running rampant in recent days over a "12-inch MacBook Pro"....very much similar to the 'MacBook Thin' that we have been talking about here on Rumors since before the first Intel-based Apple laptops shipped.

We can unequivocably confirm that such an ultraportable Macintel laptop exists -- not only that it exists, but that recent rumblings on the grapevine have been unusually close to the mark.

The key mission of the "Thin" project was to scale down the size of Pro features without compromising them. The Thin is intended to be the fastest, most feature-rich ultraportable laptop on the market.

Without further ado, here are the specs we have been told to expect based on exhaustive recon from trusted sources in Cupertino and Southeast Asia:

"Macbook Thin" -- spec-wise, primarily a variant of the Pro family but will probably be branded as separate from the standard *or* Pro MacBook families. Shipping name is unconfirmed.
12-inch widescreen display, 1280x800 resolution.
2.16 or 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors
1GB of DDR2-667 memory standard. Max. capacity 3GB.
Standard "Pro" ports: USB2, Firewire 400 & 800, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital/Analog Audio minijack I/O ports.
ExpressCard expansion slot (believed to be /34 type)
Similar storage to "Pro": 2.5in SATA HDDs at 120GB & up, 'Combo' or 'Super' optical drive.
ATi Radeon Mobility X1600 or nVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 graphics systems with 256MB of VRAM.
Mini-DVI display connector with full second display capabilities
Of course, Built-in iSight, stereo microphone, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.
Battery life is expected to be "best in class" at about 6.5 hours real-world, some reports have suggested up to 8 hours is possible.
All in all, a very solid new offering....the real question, at this time, is when it will ship. Right now the lineup of new non-Mac products at Macworld San Francisco that Apple will be introducing is so jam-packed with iPhone and iTV (new high-end iPods are expected to be announced several weeks later) plus several new software packages and an updated Leopard Preview that many rumor-mongers are skeptical about a MacBook Thin announcement the same day....but either way, it's not too much longer to wait now.

The general grapevine consensus seems to be that the Thin will ship in earnest within 10 weeks, and be announced in about six. Stay tuned for regular updates on this and every other Mac-related topic here on the Original Mac Rumor Site!

They're up there with digitimes in terms of total "wrongness."

Sorry, but I honestly think that this is 'too good to be true'...

Even when it was the PowerBook line, the 12" model was 'less' than the bigger models. Slower processor, worse video chip, no card slot, no FireWire 800.

And the 'stereo microphone' is a dead giveaway that it's wrong. Not even the current MacBook Pros have stereo microphones. And an 8 hour battery life is also stretching the bounds of reality. Also odd is the claim that it wouldn't be regular or Pro. It would certainly fit in the 'Pro' line with those specs.

I'm not completely discounting the idea of a new slim widescreen 12" MacBook Pro, just that this rumor is rather obviously false. (Unless Apple updates the rest of the line at the same time. But it strikes me as a little soon to do that.)

My guess is that there is a new 12" widescreen model coming, that it will be 'Pro', and there are two options for its specs:
1. It is specificationally identical to the current $1999 15" MacBook Pros, so that literally the only difference between all three models is the screen size...
2. It will be missing the ExpressCard slot and FireWire 800, and will possibly have a lower-end video chip than the existing MacBook Pros, but it WILL be a discrete chip, not a GMA 950. Essentially, it will be a smaller 'Pro' MacBook, and will cost $1799 for a computer that (other than the possible changes mentioned above,) is identical to the $1999 15" MBP, but with a 'slightly-smaller-than-the-MacBook' package. Or, one could also say that it would offer the same specs as the Black MacBook, but with discrete graphics, and a slightly smaller screen.

Either way, it will certainly be Aluminum, with the styling of the Pro line, not the 'base' line.

Physically impossible. Won't be any thinner, or any smaller without sacrificing some of that. And no way they'll have manageable heat with that GFX and CPU setup the way their lappys have been lately. I'd say that something much smaller than the MBP (and thinner) would have to use a Core Duo again- the 1.83GHz Yonah LV. As far as I've seen, Intel hasn't released low power versions of C2D yet.

Haven't they been touting this 12'' MBP for months now, since before WWDC? If they wish hard enough will it come true? A new rumor for every major keynote.

Remember their Mac Pro specs?

8-core Mac Pros (which don't exist) based on 2 quad core Conroe processors (which don't exist and even if they did wouldn't work in dual processor combinations) at speeds exceeding 3GHz (which don't exist for any of the Core processors).

They're just plain stupid.

And an ultra-light ultra-thin laptop would do a bit of the old China Syndrome with a Core 2 Duo T7xxx in it. At most we'd be looking at the ULV version.

macosrumors is dodgy, dodgy, dodgy.

Lol those are nice specs. The questions is, how can you fit all those nice things into a 12" MacBook Pro?

And how much thinner could it get, really? If you name a project "thin" then you probably want to make it thinner than the ones you have now, I just don't think you could get (or want them) much thinner.

We'll see that 15.4 inch MacBook anytime now, too, since HonHai announced that they had a contract for it. That one made complete sense.

You are wrong man you know that this entire statement is TRUE!

Oh well, I stand corrected. If they say they can unequivocally confirm that rumour, just as they said about the 8-core Conroe Mac Pro I'm still waiting for...

Don't we already have a 15.4" Macbook Pro?

MacBook not MacBook Pro.

I really dont think this should happen, I think it would create confusion. I can already see the threads "Black MacBook or Thin MacBook Pro???"

8 hours on merom is not likely unless its a ULV model. the only cpu that can do that so far is the U1400 Core Solo which is the VAIO Bond used.
but of course its nice to imagine its possible with the T7400 and T7600.
