e've been talking about a "MacBook Thin" since before Apple transitioned its laptops to the Intel platform -- and it looks like the long-awaited Macintel ultra-thin, ultra-portable speed king is heading to market at last!
Speculation has been running rampant in recent days over a "12-inch MacBook Pro"....very much similar to the 'MacBook Thin' that we have been talking about here on Rumors since before the first Intel-based Apple laptops shipped.
We can unequivocably confirm that such an ultraportable Macintel laptop exists -- not only that it exists, but that recent rumblings on the grapevine have been unusually close to the mark.
The key mission of the "Thin" project was to scale down the size of Pro features without compromising them. The Thin is intended to be the fastest, most feature-rich ultraportable laptop on the market.
Without further ado, here are the specs we have been told to expect based on exhaustive recon from trusted sources in Cupertino and Southeast Asia:
"Macbook Thin" -- spec-wise, primarily a variant of the Pro family but will probably be branded as separate from the standard *or* Pro MacBook families. Shipping name is unconfirmed.
12-inch widescreen display, 1280x800 resolution.
2.16 or 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors
1GB of DDR2-667 memory standard. Max. capacity 3GB.
Standard "Pro" ports: USB2, Firewire 400 & 800, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital/Analog Audio minijack I/O ports.
ExpressCard expansion slot (believed to be /34 type)
Similar storage to "Pro": 2.5in SATA HDDs at 120GB & up, 'Combo' or 'Super' optical drive.
ATi Radeon Mobility X1600 or nVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 graphics systems with 256MB of VRAM.
Mini-DVI display connector with full second display capabilities
Of course, Built-in iSight, stereo microphone, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.
Battery life is expected to be "best in class" at about 6.5 hours real-world, some reports have suggested up to 8 hours is possible.
All in all, a very solid new offering....the real question, at this time, is when it will ship. Right now the lineup of new non-Mac products at Macworld San Francisco that Apple will be introducing is so jam-packed with iPhone and iTV (new high-end iPods are expected to be announced several weeks later) plus several new software packages and an updated Leopard Preview that many rumor-mongers are skeptical about a MacBook Thin announcement the same day....but either way, it's not too much longer to wait now.
The general grapevine consensus seems to be that the Thin will ship in earnest within 10 weeks, and be announced in about six. Stay tuned for regular updates on this and every other Mac-related topic here on the Original Mac Rumor Site!
