New Macbook. VERY impressed by Apple

Yesterday I made the move to order my first Mac from the Apple site. It's a 2.16GHz Whitebook. It was ordered at around 3-4pm. Immediately after checking, I went to check the estimated delivery date, it was something like 8th -10th of July, making it around a week. Now of course I wanted it as soon as possible bu I didn't think those ETA's were too bad.

But today, about (or probably exactly) 24 hours later, my MB was delivered! I was so suprised and never had delivery as quick as this from any site. What a great first experience from Apple! Has anyone else had such rapid service from Apple?

Right now I'm getting to grips with Mac OSX, and I must admit it's taking a while after using Windows for so long. Nevertheless, I LOVE the UI and have downloaded so much stuff like widgets and other things.

I will be looking to finally be a proper Mac user afetr surfing these forums for weeks, waiting and deciding on which Mac to purchase!

EDIT: I didn't mention that this was a refurb giving me 16% off the original price. Excellent value and the MB is in PRISTINE condition!
 
Congrats on getting a Mac! I personally have never had any experience with the online store, I just go in to the regular store to buy.
 
I ordered my MacBook last year on a Friday, and got it on Monday with normal shipping. Stuff seems to ship fast to the central US.
 
i called HP support to get a replacement dvd drive for my laptop, under warrentee, i called them tuesday afternoon (july 3rd) they told me it would be here july 9th...i got it july 5th...lets just say im quite impressed with HP support.


but seriously people, those of you who live by a apple store, you have no right to complain about shipping times go to the freaking store if you want it right away...thats how i got my MBP, walked in, told the guy i wanted that one, 30 seconds he was back with it, handed him three credit cards, and out the door i went... best part, no shipping (and my 200 dollar student discount).

Welcome aboard! I made the switch in 2001 and haven't looked back since. While my day job is that of a .NET developer, I'd much rather be working on my :apple:!!!

It took you many credit cards? Maybe patience is a virtue...Just kidding:)

I agree with the store thing though. In the Bay Area, Apple stores are dispersed unevenly. The one closest to me is 30 minutes away, and I still decided to go into the store. There's just something unsatisfying about online buying.
 
my dad ordered a macbook w/ standard ground. Called to upgrade it to 2-3 day and to tell them they did something with the credit card wrong, and they... gave him overnight 4 free.

yeah i wish i could that, but i wanted the 160gb 7200rpm and you have to order those online!
i still dont understand why apple does this, they should just keep some of the upgrades on hand like ram and harddrives, it would take them 10 minutes to do a HD upgrade in store!

Congratulations!!!I know the feeling man...Feel like a kid again. Also, careful on the widgets man. Some needs more memory than application.
 
I just ordered a 2.2 SR MBP last night - although the delivery time is a little longer due to the high demand, I can't wait!

That's more labor, more storage, more everything. Having two different parts that can be ready to be swapped would mean about 25% of an hour's labor for one notebook. Assuming that Apple retail employees make at least $10 (in California) then you're talking about at least $2.50 in labor. Now imagine you had to do that for every single customer who wanted a customized notebook. It would be a lot easier to just keep some 160gig models in the store along with the base 120gig models.
 
our store will do memory upgrades, you just have to wait like an hour or so, but hey its in the mall so theres plenty to pass the time, my store is about 20-25 minutes away depending on traffic, it took me 1hr and 10 minutes to drive up there buy it, and drive back home, i even tried to apply for juniper credit (cause i knew i didnt have enough limit on my card, its only $2000)

so i ended up using a work card, and my girlfriends card, as well as mine..then i remembered i could get the student discount so i refunded the s200 to the work card, so really i just used two cards :p
 
^ There is other places beside the official Apple stores that will do memory upgrades and not void the warranty (as long as it is a certificated vender).

Memory upgrades will almost never void the warrantee if done my yourself, minus the iMac/Mini. HD upgrades are only possible my the MB and MP without warrantee voidin' so a tech is required for those with a MBP, iMac, + Mini. Just so it's noted, it never hurts to have the tech do anything for you, but you'll pay for it.

True - but there is a lot of people who might not be the most confident installing RAM and I installing it wrongly and screwing up your lappy wouldn't be covered :p But that said, installing RAM is very straight forward on the MB/P's.

More of an issue with other laptop brands.
 
Thats what I love about these forums, everybody is so welcoming to newcomers to Mac no matter how many bloody "New Mac User" threads are made.

BTW, I've been looking for a good finance manager to manage my accounts/transactions ie how I use my money. What does everybody use? Also, can anyone recommend good sites for Mac dedicated software? I've read all the threads on "mus"t install programs (VLC, Quicksilver etc) but I also wanna see what other choices there are.

QuickBooks is very good for Accounts software. Heard good reports and apparently it is very straight forward.

Mac dedicated software? Well you get bits and bobs from MacUpdate but generally when you need something, Googling it is your best bet.

The Ram upgrades on mini/iMac Will Not void the :apple: warranty ..


The harddrive upgrade will void the warranty if its done by yourself that part is only be done by :apple: certified tech then its under warranty by not :apple: .... :eek:
 
i recently got a refurb black macbook like a week ago...i am very well impressed by apples shipping time...it took only 3 days from california to toronto...which is fast imo...

refurbs from apple are great...perfect condition as if it were new...

I might be able to name a couple of sites, but I could definitely give you a list of my own (you can PM me if you're interested). I know a bunch of apps that you would probably like, although Quicksilver is probably the best! :)

Congratulations on your Macbook too - I have the white 2ghz model, with 1 gig of ram and an 80 gig hard drive. I LOVE it.

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading RAM from 1GB to 2GB? I was thinking about doing this but not sure there will be a significant difference seeing as how everything seems to be running quickly as it is now.

Also, is it worth buying a stand for the Macbook if I use it a lot at home?
 
Refurbished MacBook warning

Congratulations on becoming a Mac user. You'll never regret it.

However, be sure to back up everything. My refurbished iBook had a wireless card that wasn't working. It was under warranty, of course, and the Genius Bar sent it to Apple for repair. They fixed the wireless card, and also gave me a new logic board and a new hard drive. I wasn't prepared for that, and didn't have all my work backed up.

Refurbished means used. Be smart. My laptop is fine now, as it's really a new machine. But I have AppleCare on it, just in case....
