New Macbook with Leopard

When can I buy a Macbook with Leopard preinstalled? 10/26 at the Apple Store? 10/26 at any authorized seller? 10/26 online? Before then? DECEMBER?

This is my first mac since I was in college and I have no idea what to expect. I appreciate any advice.

If I have to wait, I figure go buy one now and get Leopard through up-to-date.

Apple is saying that orders made on the 26th will ship with it, and stores should have Leopard on and after that date on their machines. Nothing wrong with buying now with Tiger though and getting Leopard via uptodate. As I've explained in other threads, it's a benefit to have both Tiger and Leopard, at least in the beginning until we know Leopard truly is bug-free.

Soo, if I buy a Macbook now can I go back to Tiger if Leopard is too buggy?

Meaning I will have a copy of Tiger with the Macbook (or MBP)?

How much trouble/time to upgrade?

And if purchased with Tiger now, how much trouble & time do you think will be involved to perform the upgrade to Leopard, once its bugginess is assessed?

I see that Apple refers to the process taking "an hour or two" -- is that realistic? Does it take that long? Would you need to reinstall iLife and whatever else came preinstalled?

I'm curious about this, too. I just ordered a new MBP and want to do a clean reinstall...so can I do that from the uptodate Leopard disk? If so, I will just use it as is until I get Leopard and then I will zero out the disk and install everything fresh from Leopard.

It's really really easy; it's just a little intimidating the first time you do it When you reinstall, you can choose what to (and what not to) include and it often takes around an hour or two, depending on the speed of the machine and the options you chose.

macbook with Leopard

Apple France told me that I would best delay my order until a couple of weeks after 26Oct to get a Macbook with Leopard preinstalled. But Apple UK said from 26 Oct it would be preinstalled. Personally I don't want to do a re-install of the OS by getting it with Tiger then installing Leopard. Reminds me too much of past "easy upgrades " in the Windows world.
Not to mention the hassle of actually getting hold of Leopard "cheap" after buying the Macbook with Tiger.
I don't think the sales people really know themselves.

It'll be fun to install Leopard on an extra partition or external drive to play with on day one, but I'd wait until at least 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 before making the switch. I think Tiger was ready for prime time around 10.4.2 or 10.4.3. You can tell when it is stable because that is when Apple reissues the retail DVD with a 10.4.x version.

The x.x.1 release is usually a "oh my god, everything is broken" fix that comes out a week or 2 after launch. The x.x.2 release is then usually the first regular maintenance release that starts polishing everything.
