Hey guys I have a Core Duo macbook that I bought in May 2006 and I'm gonna sell it to my bro and get a new macbook when they come out. If you had to take a guess, when do you think they'd be released? I'm thinkin with Leopard cause I can't see Apple entering the holiday season without releasing a new notebook. Your thoughts are appreciated, thanks in advance!

But as long as I'm here, I'll guess; No new MB/MBPs with Leopard. This holiday season will be all about new iPods.
My only exception to my guess would be if a 12" ultra-portable were released, but I doubt any significant changes to the MB/MBP line before Q1/08.
Is the gma950 capable of running leopard, If not they have to release at least upgraded macbooks

Well, if you look at the buyer's guide, the MacBook is due for an update within less than two months from now, according to its average update cycle. If I were in the market right now for a MacBook and not in a hurry, I would wait until after January just to be sure.
Supposedly, the MacBooks could be getting Intel's latest integrated graphics chip (X3000) next update. The integrated graphics on the MacBook are so horrible, even a marginal update would be a welcome change.
Of course, if you're looking for graphics performance you're better off getting a MBP, as Apple does not see it fit to give a $1,000+ machine a half-decent dedicated graphics card anymore.
More important than the guide is the fact that Apple regularly updates the Macbooks based around education season. With the exception of in 2005 (when the last iBook G4s were released), since 2002 Apple has dropped iBooks/Macbooks in April/May and in October/November.
It's safe to assume that the Macbook will be updated between Sept 17th (day after Mac+iPod promotion ends) and Nov. 20th (Tuesday before Thanksgiving). It will come either at MW Paris (end of September), the Leopard event (end of October), or as a silent speedbump. Forced to pick, I'd vote for Paris, then silent speed-bump.

There is nothing to refresh with pre-Penryn. Maybe the 17 incher goes LED and gets the Merom Extreme for mega-ultra bucks, but there's little to do for the 15 inchers.
No MBP pre-MWSF (and even then, maybe nothing until Feb/March).
A speed bump with an HD upgrade is possible. While it's true that Intel doesn't have much for us in terms of notebooks until early next year, that doesn't mean that Apple won't update the mbp or mb before then. I think a small speed bump with an HD upgrade is likely before the holiday season. Even Apple knows that a six month old computer is not going to sell well during the holiday season.
As someone already mentioned, the MBP was updated (fairly significantly - new LED display, SR Chipset with increased FSB 800MHz and upgradeable to 4MB RAM and nVidia m8600GT video - great video). This all happened just 2 months ago. Is this not enough or do you wish that apple would already update this? I think ppl that think there is a new update very soon for MBP 15" need to realize that Apple is already doing a great job updating these things and they need to let their latest revision sell and work out the kinks before they just throw something new on. I personally don't see a MBP update coming this year (at least the 15").

Hmm I do hope they update before the end of november so I can get one when I come back home from college. It does make sense to at least have ONE updated notebook for the holiday season. *crosses fingers*
The high-end Penryn chips are not out until November and will be put in the Mac Pros shortly thereafter. The mobile versions of Penryn will be released even later, into early '08. Although I agree with you from a technological standpoint, it sucks to think that we will not see a MBP update for another 6-8 months...
Yes, for the moment, the mbp will not see an update. However, once we enter October/November territory, things will change. All of the things you mentioned above will be old news, and Apple will have to deliver more stuff in order to justify the "Pro" moniker. Again, even if it's as simple as a speed bump with an HD upgrade, the update will happen before the Holiday Season. If you check out the Buyer's Guide, you will see that both notebook lines have seen updates in the Fall at some point before Christmas buying begins.
It's enough for now, but not forever. Technology ages the minute it comes out, and Apple is not very responsive to this. Personally, I like the updates the way they are spread out; it gives people the chance to know what has changed. Compared to PC vendors who simply change prices or specs without much fanfare, and thus causing confusion when a customer attempts to compare prices, the Apple way is very simple and easy to follow. However, if you expect the currect mbp to be a top-of-line machine come November, you're sadly mistaken.

As for doing a "great" job, Apple is not doing a "great" job updating the line-up. It took a year for the iMac to be updated, it took a whole month after SR was out before the mbp got it. Apple is doing an "okay" job updating the line-up, not a "great" job.
I really don't think mb or mbps will get updated again this year. If you trust the buyer's guide, then both machines won't get updated till late november/december. It would be a bit late for shopping season (shipping is slow when new products are released, especially during high demands). I think they would wait until MWSF. It's not like they haven't delayed releases before when they don't have anything significant to put in (ex: iMac). For the OP I would just hang on to the CD mb you have now and sell and get a new one next year when they come out. There's not that big of a jump from the CD to C2D macbooks.
Edit: Apple took a month after SR was out before putting it in mbps because the supply was probably low at that time, and it's better to test them out instead of handing them out right after, using their customers as their experiments.

Thank you everyone for replying to my post. Your advice has been insightful. Yeah I'm going to wait until I see the macbook update before I decide to upgrade. Hopefully it gets a dedicated gfx card like 128mb 8400M, SR, and LED screens. ALso maybe a 12 inch version?
It is not what you want to hear, but I highly doubt the MacBook will receive a dedicated graphics card any time in the near future. It is one of the key differentiators between the MacBook and MacBok Pro lines, and the dedicated card is basically reserved for the higher end systems and for prosumers. I expect we will see integrated graphics in the MacBook for quite some time, like it or not.
And in general, do not expect to see any major technology updates to the MacBook until the MacBook Pro has had them for a while. In the case of the Santa Rosa chipset, yes the MacBooks could receive them since the MBPs have had them for a while, but Apple may not make this move until they move the MBP to Penryn, again, for product differentiation reasons. And if this is the case, then as has been discussed above, we may be waiting until early '08 for this to happen...
You'll be waiting a looonnngggg time if you want all that. With the speed of the Core Duo processors and beyond, it is a safe bet that MacBooks will NEVER have dedicated graphics cards. These aren't designed to be gaming machines, so there is no justification for the cost of dedicated hardware. The CPU and main RAM can handle the video needs just fine for 99% of customers.
There will also never be a 12" version of the MacBook. 13" lcds are the sweetspot in terms of cost per unit and most customers want bigger, not smaller. Any ultra-small notebook that Apple releases will be a macbook pro only and targeted towards the business user.
Of the items on your wish list, I'd say the only one that has any chance at all is the LED screens, since the entire industry is trying to use safer materials that don't harm the environment. When the cost per unit for LED screens makes sense, the MacBook will get it.

I was afraid of this =( Which is why I'll probably spring for the smaller version of the MPB 13in or 12in when it comes out, cause I'm missin a dedicated graphics card on the MB and if the MB won't get one anytime soon, I'll just have to wait for the small MBP. Thanks for your advice/suggestions! Hopefully it won't be more than 2grand, unless it really is an ultraportable. I'd be happy if it was the size of the 12in. PBs.

The only thing to be released with Leopard is the Leopard Family Pack.
MacBooks (and the Mac mini) should be updated again once they can make a quick switch to a new integrated graphics solution. MacBooks are selling too well right now to perform a switch of any significance.

Same prices. Higher Megapixel iSight, same ports, hopefully moving to LED screens.
I don't know how I feel about that. Apple usually likes to keep the base mb Superdrive-free. I guess it's possible that they'll finally change it, but I'm not holding my breath.
