New Mack Pro or used 12 core Mac Pro

Which would would be better for light gaming, and light video production. I know the old mac was a power thirsty beast at idle and that doesn't bother me any as it probably won't be running 100% of the time.

the non internal expandability of the new Pro doesn't bother me just means I get to build a nice equipment rack to store everything in.

So i guess my question is should I spend 1500 on a used machine or save some more and get a refurbished from apple

You might want to consider the new iMac with Retina. It's a screamer for gaming with the right CPU option.
The 12 Core is likely still better for video.

As an unqualified statement, this is not quite true.

However, I think you'll find that the iMac or a lower core count Mac Pro would work well for gaming and light video.

yeah, I think I might be able to get a steal of a deal on a 12 core mac pro. My buddy just upgraded his recording rig and needs to sell the pro.

I think the better option for me is the 12 core, so I can upgrade the graphic card and add the USB 3.0 and still have the firewire for all my external HDDs.

You can already put a GTX 980 in there which is vastly more powerful in gaming than the D700 in the nMP (which as far as games care is a down clocked 7970). The dual D700s can still be more powerful if you reboot into Windows and enable them through crossfire. Still, there's no upgrade option. If you're on a budget and want a machine to last as long as possible, the 12 core is likely a better option and will last you longer.

thanks, thats what I was thinking. the 12 core will last me a lot longer
