Hello,

I thought it's worth it to open a new thread and share this with you:

There has been some speculation if the Mac Pro 2013 is equipped now with a slightly faster flash ssd than it was originally in 2013-201?.

I recently got a brand new MacPro2013 (with 1TB flash ssd) after Apple dropped the prices and I took a look at the write/read speeds using BlackMagic Disk Speed Test app.

My results, this is with the 1TB flash SSD:

write: about 1350MB/sec
read: about 1470MB/sec

Obviously this is roughly only half the speed which can be achieved with the latest tech, but it seems to be a little bit faster than measured in 2013/2014 and originally advertised by Apple.

If memory serves, Apple boosted the Flash speeds in the Mac Pro around 2015, so they're still using the same chips from then. If memory serves.

I can't find the article to confirm this though so I might be talking from my rear. Still, thank you for taking the time to share your findings! :)
 
I confirmed this about a year and a half ago with MacVidCards/Rominator here on the forums. Apple, indeed, did change the SSD to the faster ones. I get similar performance from my Trash Can purchased in August of 2015.
 
Nice. I got mine in 2015 and it gets 950/950 read and write. Still more than enough for my workflow.

Can you also go into system report and see what the boot ROM and SMC version is? Also under Graphics see if the Revision ID is something other than 0x0000 ...

I bought mine in 2014, it's slower. Speaking of which, any of you know if this one worth considering as an upgrade? Could not find a review. These new Apple SSDs can't be purchased separately I suppose?

To be honest - just in asking this question you've most likely wasted more of your time than the new disk would save over its lifetime.

A few milliseconds here and there don't really matter. And if you spend a couple of hours moving your system to the faster disk - that's a couple of hours that you've lost forever. ...to save a few milliseconds.

Nah, it's mostly about the space for me. The one I use now is only 250 gigs. That's why I want to know if the mcetech upgrade is reliable.

Well, now we have confirmed that it is still the same in 2017 ; )

From what I read the original Samsung SSDs were SMxxxF (SSUAX) and the current ones are SMxxxG (SSUBX).

My SM0512G is showing 1330 write and 1380 read in Blackmagic. What is sad is that my old cMP could get close to 1500 with a SM951.

The 1TB MCE appears to be a bit slower on the write but same on read. Probably limited by PCIe bus speed.
 
Yup, the 1TB SSD was upgraded - I get around 1,500MBytes/sec R/W or 150% the speed of the 2014 1TB SSD

When processing 6K RED RAW video w/ 12-core D700s, the extra 500MB/s is quite noticeable.
FCPX consistently accesses near 96% of the 12-core Xeon w/ the new SSD, flat-lines at 2,365% CPU use.

I swapped the original 2013 MacPro's 250BG drive with the late 2015 MacBook Pro's 500GB drive which was 2x the speed of previous generations. 100% compatible drive. The heatsink of the original MacPro drive can be removed with a screwdriver and a little force. Simply attach it via thermal heatsink tape to the MacBook Pro's 2015 drive. My speed is comparable to your new 1gb drive. It's definitely a step up from the original drive that came with the MacPro 2013.
