Has any one else spotted this? On Apples page for high sierra under the VR section, it says:

"...virtual reality experiences on Mac for the first time, using the new iMac with Retina 5K display, the new iMac Pro coming in late 2017 or any supported Mac paired with an external GPU.3 "

If you scroll to the bottom to see what the 3 means, it says "Planned for spring 18".

I didn't watch they keynote so I don't know if they announced it there, but it looks like apple will be finally releasing macs with official support to connect them to external GPU's. That's quite exciting in my opinion!
 
eGPU support will come in 2018, but you won't need a new Mac for that, only a thunderbolt 3 Mac.
It'll probably be enabled by a software update.
