Has anyone with either the 11 or 13 inch MBA's tried a miniDP to HDMI adapter to a home theater to see if sound is included? I don't think there is optical digital out on the headphone jack as in previous Mac's, so it would be nice if there were digital audio out... Thanks in advance!

It should work

I've read in a couple threads that people have had success with getting audio out through the Mini-DisplayPort. If you require an adapter, make sure it supports audio pass-through.

Thanks! Any idea which adapters are compatible? I found a couple out there. One from Moshi and one from Griffin. But both are about $30 ($26.50 to $35) on amazon (cheaper than apple.com)

I use the one from monoprice.com. They are around $10 each shipped and work great. I highly recommend monoprice.com for their cables / accessories
I have the one from monoprice that I've used with an older MacBook Pro for video only.

What settings should I be looking for in my Air's preferences to convince sound to go through HDMI? I'm not having much luck...

I was just looking at the ones from MonoPrice a little while ago. Unfortunately they are the older version Display Port adapters, (1.1) and do not support audio. :( I was going to pick one up there myself, but I guess I'll keep looking. I refuse to pay Apple's price.

I have the Apple mini DVI from a year ago, but never even thought to test the sound. I guess I'll do that tomorrow and see if it works. I'm guessing no as it did not work with the MBP I tried it with, so I'm guessing if the MBA is capable, it probably takes a special adapter.

DVI does not support audio.

So the new MBA has a different type of port? I knew it didn't support audio in the past, but the thread has me curious why people are linking adapters as if it would work.

If the DVI port ont he MBA doesn't support audio, no adapter is going to make it work. If people have had it work then clearly the MBA's DVI has the ability to output sound and it's the older adapter that doesn't support audio?

Had to try my year old Apple brand DVI to HDMI.. no sound as I thought, I guess I missed the tech spec's if the new DVI's are capable of sound with a different adapter.

The MBA doesn't have a DVI port. It has a mini DisplayPort like other recent MacBooks. There are adapters for miniDP to HDMI that carry sound (in addition to video) in the latest MacBooks.

Sorry! I've been using the wrong term. My bad. I have the adapter that fits, and send video fine but fails to send audio. Guess the Apple branded ones fail to carry audio.

Yeah, the adapter would need to be newer than the year-old one you have, I suppose.

According to the feedback and reviews on Amazon, the one linked to above will send both audio and video from the new MBA's miniDP. I'll see in a few days....

I bought a MDP->HDMI cable on eBay for $12 that claims to carry audio - and it does. Works perfectly with my 11" MBA!

The Moshi DP -> HDMI works just fine.

Don't forget to check your sound preferences to make sure sound is being sent to the right output device when you hook up via HDMI. Its not quite automatic.

Got this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DisplayPort...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1288457996&sr=1-1

No audio, in sys pref audio out says along lines of samsung audio no support, connected to new Samsung 46" LED.

ok, so i tried it with an 'older' Samsung plasma, same message, however this time i got audio (sweet btw) kinda weird does it depend on the TV/Device?

also weird, works with 1080p and video everythings cool on Samsung 50" Plasma but on the newer Samsung LED 46" its jittery and no sound, very strange.

I just received and tested the one I bought from amazon. It worked great and with sound. Packaging looked just like apple's ( if apple made one )
