I just got my new mbp 2.25 with 160gb hd. I really like the mbp Iam still learning it. But i notice it only has 130gb where did the other 30gb go?

Umm... part of is that "160GB" ≠ "160GB" in real numbers...that is normal hard drive procedure...

The other is taken up by the OS, but that still seems a little odd, also if you have loaded anything on your computer...yeah.

To see actual numbers, click on the Apple in the top left hand corner, click "About this Mac" and then "More Info" it will give you more specific information.

Well ... about 10-12 went to formatting plus the difference between binary and decimal measurements of a Gigabyte.

The rest is OS X and iLife.

Terrorists have taken the other 30 GB. Are you a bad enough dude to get them back?

The problem is that drive manufacturers list their drives assuming that 1GB=1000MB rather than 1GB=1024MB. A byte is 8 bits, not 10.

I am so glad they are fixing this. This question has been foxing new users forever!

Yeah, then we'll only be faced with questions such as

"why is that 1GB file I downloaded actually 1024MB??? The Mac filesystem bloats files!!!"

"Snow Leopard made my hard drive bigger, but I can't put more files on it?? What's going on???"

lolll

It will probably make things worse before better. A lot of people will have posts about that. I wonder if it will cause any other problems in the way of compatibility.

Yeah, but since when are any files exactly a set size, such as 1GB?

It was an easy example to come up with.

Now...

"OMG the website said the file was 2453MB, but on my hard drive it's 2572MB!!! OS X bloats files why????"

Patrix.
