I have a new SanDisk 128GB dual format flash drive -- male USB C on one side and male USB A on the other. It is formatted FAT32 to transfer files from home to a work computer. It doesn't have to be plugged into my new 16" MBP for 5 minutes before it is sizzling hot. This can't be right. I have another USB A flash drive that I plug into the MBP via a USB C to USB A adapter cable, and that one doesn't heat up one bit. It is also formatted FAT32. What gives? This doesn't seem good for the flash drive, and maybe the computer. It definitely doesn't seem normal.

Any ideas?

I have a couple of those Sandisk drives. They get burning hot regardless of what computer I use them with, and when they get hot they get slow. Overall they haven’t been a great purchase, in my opinion.
In any case, it’s not the Mac that‘s making them hot.

Ah, bummer. Is there a better replacement?

I'd buy a cheap SATA SSD (128gb or 256gb). Buy "for price". I just looked on amazon and saw one for 17.99.

Then, I'd get a USB3 enclosure for it, like this:
Put them together and format for fat32.
Use that for transporting your data.

Larger than a flash drive.
But... faster and cooler.
