got a new MBP with a great display - no yellow 1/3 and just generally good.

I would be 100% satisfied with it if it didn't have stupid little flaw that annoys me. The trackpad button is slightly loose so that when I click, there's a slight rattle and gap before the click happens. It's such a silly thing, but because I've always had completely firm buttons, this one annoys me.

I tried putting some paper underneath in the battery area, but no matter how I position it, it still won't feel normal. I assume this has something to do with a slight imperfect assembly of the top case?

Has anybody encountered this and, if so, any home-made solutions?

Thanks

Now that you mention it, mine feels the same way, but until you brought it up, it never bothered me. Damn you!!!!
Joking aside, nah, I actually learnt to love it, like it feels me push against the surface and has a slight old techie, gear-driven feel vs. the rest of the computer experience.

Yes, my trackpad feels the same way as yours too.

In fact, I was so bothered by it that I brought it back to the local store where i bought it from the very next day. I then checked out the another 5-6 sets at the store, only to find out that all of them had the same kinda buttons!

I'm reconciled to the fact that it would be futile to ask for a replacement, and it's just a minor irritation to me, and I've still gotten a great machine with a great LCD (no yellow screen).

I'd live with this....

ha ha....sorry. Maybe I'll work on learning to love it! Wish I could, but since I've been using aluminum powerbooks and macbook pros for so long I just can't get used to it. I just tried one more go at the paper/tape method underneath and it's actually better but not quite. I will definitely NOT ask for a replacement given that everything else is perfect, but maybe one day I'll either get used to it, or ask apple to replace the top.

This makes me realize just what a precision instrument it is and that it's little wonder that things go wrong at the assembly line. We're talking about a few mm here that causes the user experience to be just slightly less than perfect!

Mine has the wobbly trackpad button syndrome too which I annoying considering that my former laptop which was the x1600C2D had a button that was much firmer! Oh well, I guess not everything can be perfect!

mine had it and it defenitly got much better by pressing and holding it down while it was off for a while with pressure. I pressed the whole bar at the same time down with pressure and the rattle went away, all in all it feels better.

Thanks - I'm going to try doing that since it still doesn't feel right. It's such a small thing but MAN is it annoying!

dropping a $2G's on that machine, I'd darn well make sure I got a perfect track pad.

This is someone who returned 3 different iterations of MBP's/PB's in the past! Oh, Apple makes it worth your while (free iPods, $300 Gift card, free FCP SUITE, among other amenities for my time and complaint).

No problem, just take it easy on it it has gotten well with mine with over time. I also think that with just time it has gotten much better.

You're of course right in principle. I'm worn down though and hate dealing with Apple geniuses. I often find them to be arrogant and obnoxious, especially when they tell you that 'it's within spec' without ever showing me what spec they're referring to. BS.

Since my space bar just started squeaking too, I'm going to take it in tomorrow. I don't want another replacement, just a new top.

My PB G4 had what sounds like the same issue. It cleared up after about a week of use and I have not noticed anything since.

Hi Sopranino,

The trackpad button or the squeaking space bar?

PDE, whatever happened with your trackpad button? I've got the same issue with the "loose" button on my new SR macbook pro - drives me crazy as well.

I've had this problem and basically Apple said that it's within tolerances. It would annoy me, too, and I'd return it. Shoot me now, but Dell actually has given me the best build quality. There simply haven't been issues with rattly space bars, excess play in the touchpads, etc. But when you get a perfect Apple Macbook Pro, it would be really nice. I've never gotten one, though. My only requirements: no dead pixels, rock solid keyboard, relatively evenly lit screen. I don't even care about backlight "leakage" or bleeding. I do not care if there are scratches, if the apple logo is crooked, if the cd drive makes a louder than nl noise, if the fan is on too much, if the cpu makes a whine every now and then, if the battery is a bit loose, or if the lid is loose.

My littany:
1. MBP: refurbished, magsafe adapter was corroded, and screen had a spec of dirt stuck underneath it. That screen was yellowish but I didn't even care. It was a Samsung. It had too much play with the lid hinges. Meaning if you tilt it open 45 degrees, it would "slip" b/c of gravity another 5 degrees or half an inch or so. So whenever you picked up the macbook the lid would sway back and forth. That bothered me.
2. MBP: Refurbished: keyboard spacebar was rattly, had too much play. It felt like i was hitting something not solid, and the trackpad had a hitch everytime you clicked it. IT was like a cliCLICK everytime.
3. MBP x 2: bought a new one, and each had the AUO screen that had a faint vertical band on the left side of the screen. It drove me nuts, and everytime you looked on a webpage with white, for example a news story, the 2 inch strip on the left was a shade darker. I could not stop noticing. I thought that it was in my head until I came to macrumors and was able to obssess about it with others. Other than that, the notebooks were perfect.
4. MBP Santa Rosa: space bar is a little rattly. That's all. And it came with the old magsafe adapter when I felt like the newest ones do not. The screen is absolutely ridiculously perfect. It is amazing and I have zero complaints.

If I was smarter, I'd stay away from these, but it's the thiness and the weight that keep me going back.

I would not buy a refurbished mac again, though. There is usually something wrong with it. I had thought that I would get a simple customer return b/c it was an impulse buy, but my luck has shown otherwise.

I guess I should count myself as lucky. The space bar is relatively solid if a bit floaty and the trackpad button is firm.

It's odd (this coming from a Mac noob) that an expensive notebook would exhibit such shoddy QC. I would think that this could initiate some annoying PR situations for Apple.
