got a new MBP with a great display - no yellow 1/3 and just generally good.
I would be 100% satisfied with it if it didn't have stupid little flaw that annoys me. The trackpad button is slightly loose so that when I click, there's a slight rattle and gap before the click happens. It's such a silly thing, but because I've always had completely firm buttons, this one annoys me.
I tried putting some paper underneath in the battery area, but no matter how I position it, it still won't feel normal. I assume this has something to do with a slight imperfect assembly of the top case?
Has anybody encountered this and, if so, any home-made solutions?
Thanks
I've had this problem and basically Apple said that it's within tolerances. It would annoy me, too, and I'd return it. Shoot me now, but Dell actually has given me the best build quality. There simply haven't been issues with rattly space bars, excess play in the touchpads, etc. But when you get a perfect Apple Macbook Pro, it would be really nice. I've never gotten one, though. My only requirements: no dead pixels, rock solid keyboard, relatively evenly lit screen. I don't even care about backlight "leakage" or bleeding. I do not care if there are scratches, if the apple logo is crooked, if the cd drive makes a louder than nl noise, if the fan is on too much, if the cpu makes a whine every now and then, if the battery is a bit loose, or if the lid is loose.
My littany:
1. MBP: refurbished, magsafe adapter was corroded, and screen had a spec of dirt stuck underneath it. That screen was yellowish but I didn't even care. It was a Samsung. It had too much play with the lid hinges. Meaning if you tilt it open 45 degrees, it would "slip" b/c of gravity another 5 degrees or half an inch or so. So whenever you picked up the macbook the lid would sway back and forth. That bothered me.
2. MBP: Refurbished: keyboard spacebar was rattly, had too much play. It felt like i was hitting something not solid, and the trackpad had a hitch everytime you clicked it. IT was like a cliCLICK everytime.
3. MBP x 2: bought a new one, and each had the AUO screen that had a faint vertical band on the left side of the screen. It drove me nuts, and everytime you looked on a webpage with white, for example a news story, the 2 inch strip on the left was a shade darker. I could not stop noticing. I thought that it was in my head until I came to macrumors and was able to obssess about it with others. Other than that, the notebooks were perfect.
4. MBP Santa Rosa: space bar is a little rattly. That's all. And it came with the old magsafe adapter when I felt like the newest ones do not. The screen is absolutely ridiculously perfect. It is amazing and I have zero complaints.
If I was smarter, I'd stay away from these, but it's the thiness and the weight that keep me going back.
I would not buy a refurbished mac again, though. There is usually something wrong with it. I had thought that I would get a simple customer return b/c it was an impulse buy, but my luck has shown otherwise.
