Hi Everyone!

I just received my first MBP last night - and first ever laptop!

Is there a suggestion/rule for when to put the computer to sleep v. turning it off? Is it OK to turn it off before bed around 10pm when I don't use it again until I come home from work around 4pm?

Thanks!

Congrats on your purchase!

No rule at all. Up to you.

Some people every now and again on this forum report of battery leak when the laptop has been asleep and off the charge - this is usually due to a dodgy app here and there although recently there was indeed a bluetooth fault causing significant drainage.

From what I here that has been fixed.

I usually turn the laptop fully off every so often so I fresh boot next time as a sort of spring clean.

I always shut my MacBook Pro down at night, and reboot fresh the next afternoon.
Works for me.

I use it plugged at my desk during the day. I use it unplugged in the evening. I just close the lid when I go to bed (I leave it unplugged). Plug it back in the morning and repeat. I restart it fully maybe once a month. Eveything is fine and I've been doing that for years. Have fun!

If you close all your apps before putting the machine to sleep, the battery drain will be minimal. There really isn't any harm in shutting it down or running it, if you're new to Macs, they're based on UNIX, which tends to survive long stretches of "uptime" (without shutting things down or restarting) better than Windows based machines. I always find everything a touch sluggish right after a cold start up, so I rarely shut my MBP down unless I'm installing an update.
