New MBP questions about the Lid when closed

My mbp just arrived and this is my first mac too. But there is a problem. The lid seem to be uneven. Is it normal? I order it from Apple.com, Can I bring my mbp to Apple store and exchange it?
They never lie absolutely PERFECTLY flat, but if it's really bad then yeah it might be worth taking it in. Hard to tell from the pics - how much movement is there?
It happened to mine too. I don't know when I noticed it first but it bugged me because I thought it was something I had done. I had a bad habit of taking it out of the bag my grabbing it in the middle where the lid switch is. I thought I put too much repeated pressure on it so I started picking it up from the back side where the hinges are. It just seemed to happen one day but It could have been there all the time. The lid seems real springy like it wants to open by just looking at it. I am learning to live with it.

The movement is when I press on one side, the other side moves.
Yeah, it's normal and really not that big a deal. you could try putting a book on either side to weight it down (albeit not so heavy as to damage the screen) and see if that balances it out. This worked on my last powerbook.
My MBP arrived today and it has exactly the same problem. It is really irritating after spending so much on a high end machine and the lid won't even close as well as my old macbook did, magnetic latch's really need to make their way to the MBP!
I think it's a common problem because a mate of mine had the last revision of the MBP and it was the same as mine and i've seen quite a few posts on here about it. I think it's caused because there is so much tension in the hinge to make the lid pop up when you press the latch and the lid is basically fighting against it hence why one side is always higher than the other.

I just called Applecare and they were really nice. I got disconnected when I was on hold and the lady called me back right the way. They told me to try to close the lid to test the Sleep and it worked so they said that I have to keep using my mbp like normal. I think it's ok since my mbp came with no dead pixel or anything .. I guess I will enjoy my first mac
This is just Apple's terrible, terrible, terrible build quality.
I carefully bent the corners down. It's possible, but again, don't brick a $2-3k computer over a cosmetic issue. So unless you can live with the risk of cracking your screen, you're going to live with the poor build quality.
I have a new 17" Hi-Res coming. It is my 5th 17", and I hope this one reverses the build quality.

Its a very common issue. I noticed it too when I got my MBP last February. Mac aficionados just tend to be "picky" if you will, including myself . You'll learn to live with it, its a great machine otherwise

You'll learn to live with it, its a great machine otherwise LOL, if apple wasn't two busy working on their new gimmick the IPhone, mabey they would have made these MBP's ALOT better.....its pissing me off reading about all these stupid and totally unacceptable imperfections for premium and inflatedish priced machines. I think they TRy to piss us off on purpose, just to laugh at us batching in these forumns!!!
Yes, just try to learn and live with your $3000 machine. .......is there something wrong theree???????
Yep, my MBP is like this too. It is a new SR MBP - and the screen when closed is not entirely flush, and there is more space between the bottom and top case at the sides.
I took it into the apple store, and they said that a) it was within spec, and b) the gap at least (not the non flush issue) is to make sure air can circulate when it is in clamshell mode. They asked if the non-flush issue bothered me, and I said yes, a little, so they took it to the back room and adjusted it - not sure they really did much, maybe it's a bit more flush. Anyone know how they adjust it? Just bend the screen a little or are there screws they actually change? I assume they know what they are doing at the apple store?

I bought a brand new 2.4 15" SR MBP on June 5th (the day they came out) and I used it for the last week very sparingly. I'm in the middle of finals so I didn't have much time to mess with it.
Over the weekend my friends were checking out the new laptop, and they pointed out the gap on the lid to me. I had noticed it earlier, but I thought I was being paranoid. I told them I noticed it too, and I definitely hadn't done anything to damage it.
I took it to the Apple Store last night complaining about the gap on the lid (I just dropped ~$2700.. anything less than perfect was unacceptable, especially since I was convinced to switch to Mac). The first guy I showed it to was cool about it, saying yeah you definitely want to make sure you're happy. Then he gave it to another guy who took it to the back and checked it out.
The first guy told me he was probably taking a hammer to it in the back (I think he might have lol) and in the meantime I looked at the MBPs on display. The ones on display didn't look nearly as bad as mine. When he came back out with my MBP, he said it was completely normal, and that all of them were like that. Although I didn't say anything at the moment, it looked like he had tried to adjust it or something because the gap definitely looked smaller.
I told him that the ones in the store looked like they had far less of a gap, but he tried to convince me that I was being paranoid. When I asked why the gap was on the left, and not an even gap on both sides, one of his little buddies tried to tell me that it's because the keyboard is sloped to the right for ergonomics (I laughed a little at that explanation). I asked why it would be like that because that would maybe alienate left-handed users, but I dropped the issue. Regardless, the guy offered to swap out the MBP, but he said if the new one had a gap that was worse, there was no way he was gonna exchange the new one with a waived restocking fee.
They rushed me out of the store (closing time) so I wasn't allowed to compare the two side by side, but now that I'm at home, here is my conclusion:
THE GAP IS FAR LESS PRONOUNCED IN THE NEW ONE EXCHANGED ON 6/12/07 THAN THE ORIGINAL I BOUGHT ON 6/5/07
The gap is still there, but it seems smaller than the last one (Not what I was hoping for, but hey, as long as I'm not the only one). It may be psychological, but I personally believe the new one looks better. Good luck with your purchase. If you're REALLY not satisfied, kindly ask for a new one. $2700 is not something you throw away.

I got a glossy in mid march and the screen was significantly curved. Since everything else was perfect and I didnt get a lemon, i decided to keep it.
Well it turns out it paid off because it is now almost perfectly straight.
This is a manufacturing problem but they are very aware of it. It seems the aluminum is not done settling or something. I don't know, i switched from mechanical engieering to computer science.
But I am telling you my MBP straightenned itself out just through normal use.

Gah - do you think they really hammered it? They took mine to the back room also to adjust. I'm trying to figure out how they adjusted it - there are 2 screws on the back that look like they might secure the hinges. Any ideas how they adjusted it? I might go ask at the apple store.
DUDE! the best thing to do is to get over it. My 17" Rev A Powerbook isn't perfectly even, but I'm pretty sure it's because of the mechanism in the hinge that makes them do that.
I really don't see why this bother's people. Do you stare at your MBP while it's closed?
