New mini fan speeds

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between an iMac and a mini. Noise level is important for me and while I know what to expect from the iMac, I have never used a mini before, but having a Macbook I know that such smaller fans if they rev up can be obtrusively noisy.

Would really appreciate it if some of you lucky new 2011 mini owners could give me an idea of fan speeds at idle and load please.

2.3, 2.5, 2.7 looks like 1800rpm idle, server 2ghz quad 2300rpm idle. Both sound the same. Quad is hotter for obvious reasons, anything but 2.3 is hotter as well because of video card. If you want the quietest one get the 2.3.

Our 2.3 idles/light works at 1800rpm and is ridiculously quiet for "our" everyday tasks.

With that said.....Was testing ram today and she wound up to 5400rpm and was roaring. That's the first it has been above 1800 that I know of.......YMMV

I have the quad server. It idles around 2300. If you listen for it you can hear it, but it's not obtrusive at all. The slightest sound will completely drown it out.

If I run a processor intensive task, like Handbrake, it will fire up pretty good. You can hear it clearly at that point, but it's still not really that bad, you're going to hear any fan going over 6000 RPM, I don't care what machine you're using.

The lower level models idle around 1800, as did my 2010 Mini. That was essentially silent when idling. Anything but the 2.3 (and the server) will have the upgraded GPU though, which will cause your fans to run fast more often than the other models.

Can anyone with the 2.3i7 quad 2012 and the 2.6ghz quad tell me what the fan idles at? You can find out by installing the free istat pro.

My 2.6 i7 idles at 1800 rpms. Pretty much stays there unless I run handbrake which maxes it out to 5500.

Ok thanks. Now to figure out if I buy the mac mini server can I install regular Mountain Lion.

The only advantage of buying the Server version is to configure it with 2 x 1Tb drives direct from Apple.

It;'s cheaper to configure the "middle" Mini with a 2.6 i7 and a Fusion drive if you're not going to use the Server app. (In fact, if you want the Server app, you can still buy it from the App Store and save money.)

The Server bit of the OS is now just an App that configures and controls things. So if you don't want it, just don't run it. Your OS will be otherwise identical.

1800. If i run the computer at 100% CPU I keep the fans at 3500.

Just asking, the server OS and bundle, does that include the general user application bundle, ie itunes and iphoto. I can see that the OS itself and server application could be run as desired.

Without the general user applications it is still a server and there could be additional cost to have the features of the consumer mini. Just saying not ever putting my hands on the mini server and knowing Apple this would be a question someone thinking of buying the server might want to consider.

OS X Server is "OS X", plus an application to configure the server.

If you buy it from the App Store, you just get the Server app: you don't get a whole new OS.

There is no separate Server edition of OS X. So yes, you get iTunes et al.

Glad to know that, so this is the way it has been all along with OS X nice one, on Apples part.

All I know is you don't want those fans to get too fast.
They become so obtrusively noisy, that if you're listening to something very quietly, you actually wont be able to hear what you're watching.
That's my experience with my Macbook Pro anyway.

My mini 2012 i7 2.3 from start up keeps fan at 3500 ish very laud, and no matter i close down everything. And cpu is 97-98 idle still loud. So called Genius guys end up resetting some SM... Sonthing but nothing helped, had to download fan controll and manyally reduce the fan speed. For me also quietness very important
