Every few days my 2011 mini time machine external drive disappears from the desktop. Unplugging the USB connector and reconnecting it will bring it back. I tried repacing the USB hub, but it still happens. It's a Hitachi 500mb.

sounds like too many usb devices. get rid of every one you can. plug the usb hitachi into a powered usb hub. best case is you can get it to work. then add 1 device at a time.
