New Mini owner

Just getting my new Mini set up. I bought the base model at the base exchange, then drove to Best Buy and bought 8GB of PNY RAM for $50 which is what I saved in sales tax at the base exchange.

I debated waiting until the refresh, but I don't do much that tasks my computers. I think it is a good addition to my 2011 MBP. The windows 7 box is going in the closet for now....

It's entirely fine if you want the Windows 7 box in the closet, but if you ever need it, grab a copy of Parallels or Vmware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac!

I'm not opposed to running Windows 7 on my mini, but I thought Boot Camp did that? Is Parallels or Vmware necessary? I'm still learning Mac OS after 20 years or so of Windows...

vmware allows both windows and lion to run in unity ie same time see thumbnails.

i added my windows experience index. for the second thumbnail. this is a base mini . I assigned 2gb ram towards windows 7, note the weakest score is 3d graphics .

one of the reasons i don't like the mini for gaming . as a complete and total aside all info is loaded onto my intel series 320 ssd so the setup moves and acts quickly.

Please post up your thoughts on your PNY RAM purchase and how well it's working for you. I bought the same RAM from Best Buy and I was getting a lot of errors/kernel panics. I ended up returning the RAM and buying some from Crucial.com and the issue was resolved. I may have just been unlucky and had defective RAM from Best Buy.
 
Gratz! I just finished transferring files to my own new mini. I'm semi-retiring a 2008 MBP and it's ridiculous how snappy this little aluminum brick on my desk is with programs that were running my poor old laptop into the ground. Looking forward to hearing how it performs with the RAM upgrade.

It's been almost 24 hours and I've been doing the usual and I haven't had a single glitch with the PNY RAM. I think you may have had a bad stick or something.

I did forget to add that my errors were occurring after trying to wake the Mini from sleep. Check to make sure you have no issues with that. Otherwise yeah it's likely I just had defective RAM stick.

Did you swap out your drive for an SSD? Most wake from sleep issues are SSD related.

+1 The 2011 Mac mini's have plenty of power with 8GB or 16GB of memory for running virtual machines. The 2011 Mac mini server is particularly good with 16GB of RAM. It really deserves the server nomenclature.
 
I loved my old 2008 mini and have only spent about a week with the new one. I got the 2.5Ghz i5 with AMD graphics and it plays Portal 2 wonderfully on a 37" TV screen. I upgraded to 8GB RAM and purchased the server software from the app store just because it was cheap and I never knew what I might find a use for. I look forward to getting to know it once again in a few weeks. Almost home from Afghanistan.

I've kicked my new Mini out of bed several times over the last 48 hours+ without any issues with my PNY RAM. I can say, I couldn't be happier. Sounds like you bought bum RAM...
