New Mini Server question about Front Row/DVD Player App. Any owners here?

I would take a guess and say that DVD Player would merely report back that there's no disc inserted or no disc drive installed. Of course it would start working correctly once a superdrive is connected. Front Row should definitely work, if there's no disc then it just doesn't show the DVD as an option - it should still give you the choice to browse your movie/music folder.
Is there any difference with the Mini "Server" other than no optical? If not I'd really recommend just getting the Mini with an optical and get an external HDD if you need more space. It might not be your perfect solution but it'll get you were you want to go.
I am using a MacBook with tow 500gb HD and USB optical drive. When I open DVD Player it tells me "error" and will not open or play a DVD. Since Front Row uses DVD Player to play DVDs, it will not work either. I am concern because iTunes does not support DD/DTS 5.1 through optical out so without DVD Player app it would suck.
I don't own a "Mac mini server" but I am running 10.6.1 server on my mini. I dont understand the question. DVD player and front row are still included, they both still work. You can open video_ts folders from dvdplayer. OS X server is just like OS X but with more features, not less.
The question was does it work without an internal optical drive. I have a MacBook with two HD and no internal optical drive. DVD Player app will not open to play DVD from the USB drive.
Another question is what changed to make the Air USB Optical drive work with the Mini? Did the USB drive change or is it only for Air and Mini Server?
Wow, I thought the issue concerning external dvd writers and 'SuperDrives' had been resolved long ago. I remember when I had an older mac without a SuperDrive, I was able to connect an external and somehow get the DVD player and iDVD to work - but I remember having to take some steps to get it to work. I had thought that at some point after that, Apple had made changes that enabled everything to work with external drives - is this no longer the case?
I'm considering a Mini Server, but it would be a dual purpose machine that I would hope would be able to use any external DVD burner, and allow me to use things like DVD player to play movies, and iDVD.
Hopefully someone here can confirm what is going on - because now I'm confused (not hard to do)

So it seems that it will have all the functionality if you use the external SuperDrive. The reviews, however, on the external SuperDrive are less than stellar.

I wonder if it is OSX Server that allows the use of external optical drive to play DVDs. I am running Snow Leopard on my 13" MBP but it doesn't play DVDs with USB SuperDrive.

I have a modded superdrive (replaced the CD controller and turned into a generic USB drive that would work on any machine). My 2007 iMac with SL recognized my DVD in Front row no problem. Assume it should be be fine with server as well. I will test once I put my Mini back together (upgrading the ram on it). I have SL server and regular on there. I may just remove the optical drive as a test. Will report the results.

iTunes works as does the external drive. As one poster said before, its essentially the regular version but supped up. Nothing is taken out from what I can tell.
