Simply put, it wasn’t built for one of the three sides of the triangle to get super hot."

Schiller, “And if we’ve had a pause in upgrades and updates on that, we’re sorry for that — what happened with the Mac Pro, and we’re going to come out with something great to replace it. And that’s our intention,” he says, in as clear a mea culpa as I can ever remember from Apple."

This is the best news! I'mma be first in line to buy the new modular Mac Pro next year!! Can't wait!

The good:
  • Their seemingly-genuine change in attitude, and the unusual heads-up.
  • Their frank recognition that the nMP failed as a satisfactory platform for continued evolution.
  • The hinted-at intention to incorporate a (single?) high-powered graphics card.
  • Statements that a new machine will be "modular" (hopefully not meaning dongles, etc.).
  • Throwing a bone to those with immediate needs by lowering the price on the existing models.
  • Commitment to a new monitor. My guess would be 8k.
The bad:
  • Yet another year's wait.
  • The fact that they still couldn't freaking update ANYTHING over all this time, with more wait to come.
  • The implication (due to the long additional wait) that they may not have even started on the nnMP.
The good (for me):
  • My 3,1 ought to make it to it's 10 year anniversary by the time their new announcement is made. Its retirement party may include an unboxing of its replacement (well, maybe not at the party itself out of respect for the 3,1. :))

I have a 5,1 and a 1,1 and am very happy with both in use. Am very much looking forward to the next iteration though.

All I can say to that arrogant Schiller is, Bee Eye Tea See Aitch.
 
I propose that we call it the mMP (modular Mac Pro).

I hope we can keep a mMP thread open here in the Mac Pro forum without it getting locked by a mod. The discussion here is going to be very different than the discussion on the front page article.

Schiller is literally the cool dude from Apple keeping things real and in check.

Here's a particularly hopeful statement from Phil Schiller:

"We’re not going to get into exactly what stage we’re in, just that we told the team to take the time to do something really great. To do something that can be supported for a long time with customers with updates and upgrades throughout the years. We’ll take the time it takes to do that. The current Mac Pro, as we’ve said a few times, was constrained thermally and it restricted our ability to upgrade it. And for that, we’re sorry to disappoint customers who wanted that, and we’ve asked the team to go and re-architect and design something great for the future that those Mac Pro customers who want more expandability, more upgradability in the future. It’ll meet more of those needs."

I just hope this means compliance with PCIe and other standards that allow us to expand and upgrade using off-the-shelf components. But I fear Apple will design yet another proprietary system architecture that will lock us into a proprietary ecosystem.

Well except for that whole, "future of the Pro computer for the next 10 years" thing. But to be fair it's just been that one time and he was coming off of a night of heavy drinking and bath salts.

OMG, this is amazing news! I was literally just about to start putting together a hardware list to build a Hackintosh, but now I'll put that on hold as what I have now will get me through until next year. I hope it really will be a proper modular workstation.

I'm so happy right now, woohoo! Don't screw this one up, Apple!

Yes, we were literally finalizing specs for PC workstations at the studio. This news just dropped, and we immediately ordered two Mac Pro's. When the new new ones launch (in 2 years) we'll sell these and upgrade again.
 
Damn you think they might be reading our post most people didn't want that thing anyway about time they got smart
 
Do apple still employe people at their USA plant that supposedly was set up to make the trash cans? Or was it all a vanity project for Tim?

Man, tims pipeline has been gushing into action recently! johnny must be crying right now into his custom made tempered diamond etched $100 bill
 
Woohoo! News couldn't better. My 5,1 will easily get me until next year! I had begun to accept that idea that Apple was moving away from powerful computers, but this is great.
