New Moto X or Nexus 5?

Has anyone had experience with both of these devices?

I'm looking to upgrade in the next month or two and I was sort of banking on the nexus 6. I don't do contracts so it's price tag sort of puts it out of reach.

I'll be coming from the iphone 5 so I'm not really gunning for specs. I'm looking more for a bigger screen and comparable camera. I realize the nexus 5 is already a year old and has it's quirks but all in all it seems like a lot of people are really happy with it. Plus getting updates straight from the source is something I've become accustom to from Apple.

However the Moto x 2014 with a front facing speaker and those added Motorola apps seems pretty good to.

I just got the Moto X this morning. I also have an iphone 5 but I haven't really used it for long time.

The Moto X is really nice. I love the size - would probably have liked it even a little smaller but it's not bad. The build quality is really good. Like the moto gestures and the screen display for missed calls etc. Nice, simple added value by moto and nicely done. I suspect Moto will push out Android L to this in very short time which is something I'm looking forward to.

I looked at the S5 and the Galaxy Alpha but wanted something that got updates quick and was closer to stock android. My second choice would have been the Alpha.

Think I'm really going to enjoy this phone.

If it were me. Moto X easy.

I would get the moto x. It is a near stock experience with useful added features. As another user mentioned, it gets updated fast. Some people actually received kitkit on the moto x before kitkat on the nexus 5. While the battery on the 2014 moto is not as good as the 2013 moto x, it is better than the nexus 5.

I know you said you do not do contract, but it is really easy to get a nexus 6 with 0% financing for 24 months if that is what you really want. If you are willing to spend $499 (moto X) contract free an extra $150 over 24 months is pretty damn cheap.

Moto X .... For active display and the voice controls. But the camera on the N5 is better IMHO

The Moto X. I see it has the 5.2" Nexus. You will get updated fast, and have pretty much the same hardware as the Nexus 6. That would be my phone if I went back to android.

New moto x can actually get reception and therefore doesn't randomly chew through battery like theres no tomorrow. The speaker is also twice as loud in addition to also being on the front. Combine that with vastly better build quality, a bigger screen in a smaller body and its a big win.

I wish the Moto X was the Nexus 6.. Or if Google had let LG have one more shot at the Nexus, for it to be modeled after the G3.

Had the 2014 Moto X for a few weeks before I traded it for an iPhone 6 4.7. Really liked everything about this phone except the battery life. Both mine and my wife's drained way too fast. We eventually swapped them out for 6 because of that reason. Never owned the Nexus 5 but played with it for short periods. Pure Android and wireless charging were nice!

I'd say Moto X too but I wonder if the price increase is justified.

Same amount of RAM, same battery, same screen, same amount of storage. The only differences are:

1) Processor. Snapdragon 800 vs. 801 (2.26 Ghz vs. 2.5 Ghz) Almost same
2) Camera (Both are pretty bad)

Hard to answer that one without more vibility on N5 price decrease/specs bump (if any would apply).
I only buy handsets off contract and for my two criteria (screen size and embedded flash), these two are even. I would be tempted to go for N5 mainly because of price point

I would take a 2013 moto x over the 2014 personally. I do think it a greater pity that Google didn't offer a new nexus 5 this year.

Here's my experience having both phones currently.

First a correction to the post above. The Moto is a larger phone, not smaller. It's heavier also, and I like the phone, I'm just giving you accurate information, see link below.

I used to use Motorola for their superior call quality, but a few phones have caught up. My Nexus 5 is every bit as good, in fact better in daily use, a pleasant surprise. I maintain lines on AT&T and T-Mobile because I'm a smartphone addict that has three or four phones at any given time. Currently my Nexus 5 and 2014 Moto X are both on AT&T, for nearly a year I've kept the N5 designated as my primary phone...it's that good.

I expected to experience even better performance and dedicate my Moto X to primary, but it didn't work out that way. The Moto is excellent, yet it's not as good as the Nexus much to my surprise. The N5 has a much brighter, clearer display, longer battery life and truly excellent build quality. The advancements LG has made on their phones is amazing. Then there's the huge progress and improvements in Google customer service.

Everyone in my family were using iPhones. Once they saw how compact my Nexus is, yet it's display is so beautiful and spacious at 5" I ended up buying three more Nexus 5 models. My wife and son are the two that are hard on phones and they're doing great. I bought them Spigen cases, they have held up far better than I expected. We haven't had a single problem in all these months.

My side by side daily use comparison was an eye opener. Little did I realize until I had both phones, just how great the Nexus 5 is. Therefore I'd highly suggest Nexus 5.

In fact they have aged so well Google is keeping them in the lineup for 2015. Don't get me wrong, the Moto X is nice, but day to day use is just not up to the Nexus excellence.

The N5 has a...longer battery life

I haven't heard this but when I had the Nexus 5 it had the worst battery life of any phone I've owned in my life. If it has better battery life than the Moto X than that's disastrous (and simply pathetic) for Motorola.

I actually held the 2014 moto x for the first time yesterday..I was shocked at how big it felt. Even compared to my n5 is felt awkward. The 2013 moto x is an awesome size.
